I like playing whenever I feel like it.
Being online, whether I'm at keys or not, is a great deterrent.

If I wanted to play without real competition I would fire up my 286 and dial into a bbs.

And some think that's too easy to play. Time/turn limit games test your management of resources.

But, to each their own, that's why we do have so many options.

Why would you think he cares what some people think?

You offered him a game, he declined and then you tried to justify your settings that he wasn't interest in to him. FInally, the icing on the cake is telling him his desired choice is to easy, but hey each to their own right.

Mind you he just want's to play a game.

You are exactly what's wrong with this community.

That seems a little harsh... Contributing these kind of vitriolic remarks can't do much to help the community.

I'm really thinking about starting to play again... not that I can provide much competition for the likes of you.

Maybe I'll try Micro's bang tonight...

Well, you have to consider that for 2 years she's been harping about how our style of play is wrong and that everything needs to be changed. Most of us are just getting very annoyed at her constant repetitive remarks. So no, it's not that harsh if you know the circumstances.

A dozen years ago, there were hundreds of players on most boards. I posted a couple Eclipse.ultranet.com CLV's here - 30 nodes, hard pressed to logon even, late 90's

Why did they leave TW? What has changed?

Why did people stop watching black and white televisions? Why doesn't anyone use morse code anymore? Why did people put indoor plumbing and electrical wiring in thier houses?? Things change, technology advances, this is an old text game, but that doesn't mean we have to run off every player that still appreciates playing Tradewars. The players that are still left are the ones that want to play TW just the way it has been for the last 9 years and not some edit version of it. The only thing most of the players wanted was a bug free version of this game which "we didn't get".

Why does my kiddo scoff at my treasured claymation Xmas
specials? He sees better animation daily on the Disney channel.

The BBS era was awesome, dialing in and playing a game on
someone else's computer. Having several players online at the
same time? Freakin' awesome!

But we now have Diablo and Starcraft, with hundreds of online
players, more than we can ever play with. Not to mention the
Xbox and other console games to pull away the faithful.

We've really lost nothing with a new version, more
freedom of choice. The diluting of the player base is
a weak arguement. Face it, more servers are switching to v2
and more players are playing v2.

Seems like no one wants any competition anymore.

It's still hard to find a decent game when ya want one.

Well said, Crosby.

I should add it is hard to find a decent LOW TURN game. But most games are unlims now like at UTW where just about every game are unlims.

I haven't seen a v2 server with more than 3 players on it as an average. I myself like low(er) turn games, nothing less than 1200 turns, nothing more than 5000 turns. You are right, it's hard to find a good game these days that isn't unlimited turn, but you can't ridicule Sage for providing those being that's what most of the players left in the game today want to play. There just aren't any old school players like Timberwolf and Cruncher to justify providing a game where 2 or 3 players "may" show up. As far as delays, those won't bring players, it actually runs them away. Crosby, as far as nothing lost in v2, you are wrong. The attack delay is NOT an option, and it does change the game from what v1.03 is. So I prefer NOT to play with restrictions or delays as most other players today do also. So it looks like we stick with the same game we've had for the last 10 years.

At this time, UTW offers 6 different turn games, one of which has a 6 hour time limit and a 5 minute login penalty. Most of these games have 10k sectors and have turns starting from 2500 turns per day up to 5000 turns per day.

I'll clarify. To me, low turns are 700-1000 turns. Not 2500 turns.

I created about 10 low turn edits that are usable.

Wrong? Careful sir, as you come close to mixing Fact with opinion. *smirk*

Note I underlined the opinion in the above quote. Your preference is to play
w/o delays. Fine, see Constitution, re:Free Country.
'As most other players today?' Most public players are breaking down
into two camps, the die hard v1 player, (including myself) and the v2
players..who are rusties and crusties and grudging former v1 players.
As to which camp has more players? see Micro's troller...

Quote:
So it looks like we stick with the same game we've had for the last 10 years.

We've lost nothing. We still have the original v1 game that
we've played for years....more than 10. At worst we missed an
opportunity to get the v1 bugs fixed, you can't blame a dwindling
player base on that.

Which hopefully brings us back to the original question, the lack of interest in
real competition, I think there is a niche for a server kicking off
scheduled low turn - medium turn games on a regular type schedule.
