 codeAcademy
Is hiring - http://www.codecademy.com/jobs?utm_sour ... 0Sign%20UpA friend told me of this site, learn code - for FREE They are teaching JavaScript, HTML, Ruby and Python and need developers to help them expand. I don't know any more details than this, but I do know we have some developers here, or people like me who want to learn how code. I guess I know what I'll be doing this summer.

 Re: codeAcademy
In one of the css lessons:
"The list does not seem to have a right margin. The browser rendered the margin with this width: 15px There may be a bug in the submission test. Try a value of just `15` (no `px`)."
What worries me is the teacher is trying to teach, but does not know the answer...
I'm here to learn how to code so I can help become a part of the solution, how can I learn if the lessons are broken?
Just how prevalent are bugs in teaching software?

 Re: codeAcademy
The thing I have noticed is that I learn a lot when debugging code, sometimes my own, sometimes other peoples. I also learn bad coding because I am self-taught for hte most part. My scripts are scary.

 Re: codeAcademy
Cruncher,
The problem here is that the teacher did not go through the subject before teaching it. Ive seen this before in a humanities class, there was a typo on some of the handouts. Of course the prof had no idea until we were all asking "dumb" questions.

Of course the prof had no idea until we were all asking "dumb" questions. Granted, I'm taking classes at a community college, but every one of my instructors, even the English Comp instructor have had typo's in their hand-outs. codeAcademy is free, so I guess we get what we pay for. Or is this lack of quality in the Universities as well? @Prom - debugging our own code IS how we learn. Being taught to code with programs that are buggie is driving me nuts! No wonder we're seeing more and more "smelly code" and software conflicts. Grrr.... <Edit> Not TW, but business productivity apps. </edit>

 Re: codeAcademy
Welcome to for profit universities and the world of Computer Based Training, where they employ Subject Matter Experts as a fill all solution/ "adjunct professor". In a nutshell yes it's common and becoming more prevalent everyday.

 Re: codeAcademy
So, you're saying the "adjunct professors" are probably on the same level as my community college instructors?
I say we start a revolution.... "Put an end to SMELLY CODE!"

 Re: codeAcademy
I resemble that remark.
I often search for code samples on the net, and a lot of them don't work because some editor "fixed" what he probably though was a spelling error in a block of code.

H Smelly code is a term they used in class to describe sloppy, buggy code. The ironic thing is, they are teaching us programming concepts on a buggy piece of software. Sigh...
