Trying to connect to a server and getting hit with "Failed to detect protocol. Expected telnet..." <click>

Is this on my end or is this server end?

What program are you trying to connect with?

It does it with,

ms telnet
twx 2.04
twx 2.05
swath 1.9.8

I did manage to get connected a few min ago, but either my MS is really high or something is up as it took 20 seconds to register my login.

:(

And you have a firewall entry to allow port 23 and port 2002 in and out? Try turning off the windows firewall just long enough to check.

I did as you suggested, didn't make a difference with any of the above mentioned programs. :(

It's really weird. I was able to log in to that server just fine for the last few days. I didn't change any settings, when I tried to log in got hit with the protocol thing.

Which site? Is it a TWGS Server or a BBS running a TWGS, or a BBS running a door?

I will see if I can connect :)

Then the twgs has the issue. This happened to me when I was trying to configure my server to run in a vm and was having trouble with the firewall in windows 7 AND my external firewall. Lets wait for Kaus to chime in, its his server.

I restarted the server and it started working again. I'm unsure what is causing the issue your describing however I have noticed that after x time connections seem to no longer work. I had thought it might be the dynamic domain previously, now I'm not sure.

It's not any firewall, qos, router, or setting that I'm aware of within the server itself. The server is a dedicated WIN7 machine on a Fios fiberoptic 15/15 connection. I will download some software to help diagnose the issue. Either way sorry your game play was interrupted.

Some backup dynamic domains (in-case it is the domain itself)to the same server include:
telnet://Crunchergoes.mooo.com:23
telnet://Disa.chickenkiller.com:23

That message is sent by TWGS if it doesn't receive a response to its Telnet option negotiation. The response it expects is only 3 bytes.

Could the server be behind a router that has Nagle's algorithm turned on?

There's a relatively long timeout waiting for the response, so I don't think Nagle's algorithm would keep it from negotiating the protocol.
