Yep.

I am fortunate in that I have never been good enough to have been accused of anything other than stupidity, grin.

The Cat is still floating around TW btw, I posted the SG sad news on the old egroup last year and he responded with condolences.

"hELLCAT: Just watching him navigate the game and the way he reacted to problems inspired me to build my own approach to online combat. I don't think he ever directly taught me much, but I learnt far more just by watching and analysing his methods. I will always consider the man a TW legend with what he managed to achieve using only macros and some impressive keyboard skills."

Doesn't sound like he had given him a bootleg copy of TWX.

That has always been the case, hasn't it? If a player if very good, they call him a cheat or put him down in some way. Rumor has it the only way I won back in the day was because I had access to tedit... if you don't know, ask. Don't insult a player then expect them to tell you their "trade secrets".

A couple of months ago I got all excited, a player on my server logged in as hELLCAT 2.0. I checked their IP, and it was from Los Angels, CA. Oh man... :)

Turns out it was Prde2or. Hehe...

So wait, because i reiterate what was told to me i get lumped with whoever that guy is? Please...

Why dont you two elite tw gods tell me how Hellcat who by both your definition had likely the fastest inet connection and used macros is any different than those of us who use twx? A macro is by definition a recorded set of keystrokes bound to a key.

I have no malice towards him, however lets not elevate people without the proper context. He had allot going for him which allowed for this "status".

He used a speed of inet which allowed him to render his display faster than other players, when the common speed was still dialup and most areas didnt have faster speeds...Check

He used macros for basic and presumablly advanced movements such as attacking... Check

As someone who played both with and against him in those days i remember him vividly. He was after all untouchable because of the aforementioned advanatges. Does this sound like anything You're dealing with these days? Ill be the first to admit i wasnt very good back then And mostly played passive/builder/good. Hell im not even very good these days, however his speed and macros are in my opinion the same as your debate today regarding twx just different context due to being a different time.

Wether he did or did not use twx is irrelevant to the over arching statement that you guys list and appear to elevate players who used pressed advantages they had. Yet these days you vindicate us for having a knowledge you dont.

I've been involved with Tradewars for quite a few years. I've played with and against all the players on that list, and a few more that should be on that list. If I had to rate any of them it would be on special talents each one of these players possessed and not by one being any better than the next. Some of the individual talents each one possessed are as follows, and some of these will be in multiple catagories.

1) Datamining/Strategy
--- Singularity
--- Parrothead
--- ElecTrizity

2) Best Killers/Hunters w/o support
--- Locutis
--- Res Judicata
--- The Butcher
--- Prestone

3) Best Killers/Hunters w/ support
--- Alexio
--- Hellcat
--- Lonestar

4) Best Cashing High Turns
--- Alexio
--- Zarkahn
--- Promethius
--- Lonestar

5) Best Cashing Low Turns
--- The reverend
--- Caretaker
--- Singularity
--- Kewlbreeze

6) Excellent leadership/CEO qualities
--- Singularity
--- ElecTrizity
--- Guardian
--- Kewlbreeze
--- The Butcher

7) Excellent all around scripters
--- Xide
--- Oz
--- Rammar
--- Vid Kid (Caretaker)
--- Promethius
--- SupG
--- The reverend
--- The Bounty Hunter
--- Mind Dagger

8) Excellent spur of the moment script/macro writers
--- Xide
--- Locutis
--- The Butcher
--- Promethius
--- Lonestar
--- Xanos

9) The perfect tournament corporation (active players)
--- Singularity (CEO, grid strategy)
--- Kewlbreeze (Cashing strategy, leadership)
--- The Butcher (Killer, casher)
--- The Bounty Hunter (Scripter, casher)
--- Xanos (Builder, blue strategy)

Some probably have noticed that I haven't been active in the forums or the game for several weeks now (or maybe they haven't noticed). Regardless I'm letting everyone know that I have joined the ranks of the "retired" players, and I do wish everyone well in real life and in Tradewars. There is no particular reason for this decision so don't read too much into it.

Enjoy your vacation, you'll be back! ;) Once you've invested this much time into an activity, it's in your blood.

I do not know of any elite TW gods. If there are any, I am certainly not of their number, being a mediocre player, as I have remarked from time to time over the years.

A bit difficult to reply to anything else in your post, with respect. I find it hard to understand what you are trying to say.

Perhaps if you specified what part you are having difficulty with I could elaborate? My statement was more directed at Cruncher than you.

There were a lot of players that I left off the list because I know of them by reputation only. Guardian was pretty darn good, Killer Pig had his moments, Jackal was pretty dam good as well as jack box (although I did play with the latter 2). There have been lots of great players.

One thing I wanted to see if this came out and it brings up a good point. How would the players of old last today? They would have a hell of a time. It is like trying to compare in football the Steelers of the 70's, to the niners of the 80's, to the cowboys of the 90's to the Patriots (who I despise as a Jets fan) of the 2000's. They all played in different eras with different schemes. Today players play with much different tactics than players did even 10 years ago. Apples to oranges.

Someone above said what is the difference between using a script and a macro, and I agree with what he said not much. The biggest difference there is that most players didn't write the scripts they use, they rely on scriptwriters to perfect them. With macros, they were usually written by the player that used them. After all, most scipts are a set of macros and a set of triggers in a loop.

I'm one of the players who mostly used Twar and TWHelper. It wasn't until DOS was done and I switched to ZOC did I start to write my own Macros. I never played killer position, my ping was too slow then. So yes, after 8 years away, this was a huge adjustment. Scripts today are so much more sophisticated than our simple DOS based helpers ever were. Now I do use Swath, Mombot & TWX. The trading scripts are amazing! I never before got such high profit from ports. There's a lot of jaw dropping going on with us returning players. I know that for a fact!

I know that new players could really benefit from learning to play the game script free at first (even if they get their arse handed to them) to learn the commands and what goes into playing them game. makes them better appreciate what the scripts do for them/

That's a fact. When I returned I played via the Java portal at Ice-9, completely manually. Then got busy writting a few simple Zoc macros to avoid carple tunnel :)

This.

I can't remember if TW was my first computer game or if Alone in the Dark was, but I do remember dialing into the BBS and playing with my dad and a bunch of his work buddies. I can't remember the BBS name but the sysop was called Shadow. I've played on and off since then and am constantly amazed by the complexity of the new scripts that I see. I remember thinking about how clever I was for doing copy paste pt***<pt***< now, it's just incredible.
