The Twarp took about 45 seconds to complete, in an MBBS game.
I could start the warp, then go refill my coffee in the kitchen.
Now THATS a delay.

I remember the old days when it took one second per TPW for a ship to move. If I wanted to moth with a 15 TPW IDC, I would have to wait 15 seconds for the ship to move. And imagine having to tow an IDC.

Players today are spoiled.

Yep.

Ironic, we seldom agreed on much.

It's sad, but that's how it is. I've been considering a hybrid ship delay mode where you only have delays when you're interacting with others, but if you're out trading, you can move as fast as possible. I personally believe that turn limits are the best way to limit what a player can accomplish in a given day, not delays. The delays are only needed to pace interactive activities like combat. But the current delay system goes too far by slowing you down even when you're not interacting with others.

I understand your point, especially from your position, lol. But here's my problem with those that dont like the ship delay.. PHYSICS! How can anybody expect a ship that is 2 to 3 times larger with 5 to 6 times the amount of fighters and holds than another ship has, to move at the SAME speed and be just as agile? I could even understand it if there was an explanation in the Twarp reference that said the weight of a ship makes NO difference. Just makes no sense.

Thats also where my ongoing argument of balance keeps getting pulled back into the mix. Be prepared to get pummeled by Reds on the hybrid idea, lol. It sounds like a cool idea and would be a good balancing act, indeed!

I could have sworn that HVS MBBS TW had a turn-per-warp delay. For some reason my memory recalls moving very fast in the 2tpw scout, but very slowly in the 16tpw IC. But, after returning to HVS MBBS TW I found out that the old game had no movement delays what-so-ever. You should see Zoc scripts fly in that sucker! LOL

But yeah, I can see JP's reasoning to make a hybrid ship movement delay, one to "get the job done" at top speed if no one else is around, but if two non-corped players are in the same sector, it's time to impose some delay so the human hand-eye reflexes get at least a chance to respond.

LOL!!! I'm finding it quite comical how people are coming in this game and when they realize that ship delay in ON they immediately complain and then do a quick "CBY"... why are people SO afraid to play a game where they will actualy have to be creative and work for a win.

Because of real life and other things to do. Watching a ship take so long to move really doesn't do much for the adrenaline.

So when playing the game with ship delay OFF, the "real life and other things to do." switch magically turns off? I get your point but what about balance?, thats all I'm saying. I can play a wicked Red either way, its just that with delay on, you have to be WAYY more careful, and I wonder why the "new" Tradewars players have no interest in seeing at least where the game has progressed from.

Thats what led me to include the XBOX360/PS3 reference in my post, because thats the real bottom line.. peole want that "instant" adrenaline rush from a game thats not structured that way, its a 20 year old TEXT game, lol. People that "game" have a simple choice to make... do you want to play "Tradewars 2002" or do you wanna play CoD/WoW?" And then if you DO wanna play Tradewars then do you wanna play it "Oldschool" style or "New Generation" stlyle with the Megascripts and Bots. There is enough room for everyone though, to play the game the way YOU want to!

This is a point I've made often, but I'll repeat it for those who are new to the debate (or returning to it). The majority of people playing the game are doing it on private servers with close friends, not on public servers. There are definitely people who play the game like it used to be played, but when it comes to public servers, there tends to be less variety. It's a self-perpetuating cycle. Players who like these kinds of games know they won't find them on the public sites, and those who run public sites won't run those games because there aren't enough players interested in them. Ultimately, if you want to play TradeWars a certain way, you need to look for a group of like-minded players and get together to play. I think, at its best, TW is a bit like Dungeons and Dragons. It's a game master who's willing to put in the time and effort (and often money) to host a game for a group of friends. There are some very successful public sites, but it's very difficult to attract and retain a loyal player base these days.

Micro, Big THANKS for banging the D&D game at a really fast response rate. But now NO-ONE plays it because of the "ship delay"... and I declare victory in this game, so if it can be done, could you rebang it as a SOLO game, 60K turns in a 20k sector galaxy with NO ship delay, and maybe a ONE day truce... THEN maybe we can get some players in here to play it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I have rebanged this for tonight, without the delays.

I don't normally run delays (by popular demand), but this was a V1.x TWA and it imported with the delays.
