Promethius wrote: The level of animosity on this subject would not have been reached if a player wouldn't have intentionally came in to "raise hell" so to speak. The best message that most of us could have heard (and maybe we did, and I've lost it through this), is that the game is having bug fixes and being -expanded- to allow Ops to design casual games. The key being "expanded" and not "anti-script" (which just sets off warning bells which causes us to focus on that issue).
As the "hell raiser" you speak of, we'll never know if the reactions would have differed or not. Maybe some such as yourself would have been more receptive and open to different opinions. During my "give'm hell" return rant I had quite a few PM's from people in this forum who mostly agreed with my opinions but didn't want to get thrown under the bus with me so to speak. If I had not gotten those PM's, if I was the only person with that opinion, I would have left... again... Quite honestly I do have a lot of passion for this game, as many do. Not exactly sure why that is, but we do. And I for one felt that I was "robbed" of my game. I was extremely shocked at the level of script play that had evolved during my absence. There are two styles of play, one much more automated that the other, both rely on player side scripts. Disabling scripts is NOT the option, but with the toggles we have now, we can offer different games for different styles. I think we've not only won the battle, but we've won the war as well. Let us play! ;P

The problem is AFK offensive scripts.
A retread from pre TWX days, or a newbie, joins a game. Usually, they are smoked in short order and do not return.
I cannot understand what satisfaction there is to have the CPU play the game for a Trader, who, presumably, reads the capture file next day and gloats about how well his/her script handled the session, the while bemoaning that a TW version which did not support such play might be made available for others whose taste differed. AFK AFK, only n00bs run them. Vets do not. AFK defensive scripts yes, attack scripts no. People who do run them, attack scripts afk, wind up in the logs as #SD#. That is my experience. H

.. and what "war" is it that you speak of? Talking of winning a "war" could very easily backfire with script players making it a point to go into non-script games and adapting with new tactics. Why create that atmosphere?

H AFK Attack scripts run against noobs are effective. They have no idea what just hit them. All they know is they paid a toll, or killed a single def fig, then blam.. back at the menu, you've just been #SD#.

But only n00bs run attack scripts afk, H Team Kraaken may be insulted if you call them n00bs. LOL Zep's ping was slow, we knew we could bounce him running his AFK adjacent photon script, that's how we discovered that his script also warps him to SD to reload photons when we counted #11 firing - Stock ships. But, bounce him to use up his fuel ore was about all ATK players can do.

 Re: Let's get graphical!
This thread is still on topic, because the point of going graphical was to limit scripting. And that's a hot-button issue you can't bring up without creating a major dust-up. promethius wrote: and what "war" is it that you speak of? Talking of winning a "war" could very easily backfire with script players making it a point to go into non-script games and adapting with new tactics. Why create that atmosphere? It's too late for that. Over and over in threads I've participated in on this subject, "some people" have made just such threats. This is why I am of the opinion that "some people" are actively working against any effort to provide options that limit scripts, are actively searching for bugs to exploit to undermine already implemented options, and will do everything within their power to crash script-limited games, irrespective of the wishes of the gameop or players in those games. If there is a gauntlet that has been thrown down, it has been by those players. I really do feel like it is a battle. It should be enough for gameops to establish the kinds of games they want, and players should respect that. But that's not the case. I'm forced to do my best to implement every rule in-game because there really is no integrity/respect for others from "some players". I can't say who all of "some players" is, but I can say that among those active on this site since I've returned, it's really only Kewlbreeze, Farley and Big D, though I don't know how much Big D actually plays. Singularity often expresses the view that "some players" will actively work to crash any games meant to keep them out, but I'm not convinced that he personally would do that. Far as I know, that's the extent of it. But I'm sure there are some who are less vocal about their intentions. I don't assume anyone is like that until they make it clear, as those three have. Oh, also, for the record, I don't think that Cruncher's agitation on this site is behind any of this. My position on this is based on the many private messages I get on the subject from people who don't have the courage Cruncher has to come in here and take the punishment she takes for having a different view. I stand up for all of those players, people who guys like Kewlbreeze deny even exist. And I think my position on the subject is more than enough to stoke the flames. Prom, you said something about it not being clear that I'm adding options to limit scripts/bots as opposed to trying to kill them outright. I'm honestly tired of trying to make that distinction. I don't think reality is that important to "some people" anyway. All I can say is, actions speak louder than words. When I do change the game in a way that limits scripts/bots without making that an option, or even without making that option default to the script-friendly setting, then "some people" can feel free to complain. Until then, I'm tired of wasting so much time trying to convince people.
