You can tell they are doing a decent job because they are doing the job.

 That makes no sense at all.

Let me put it this way: You can tell they are doing a decent job, because their butts have not been fired. LOL

You seem to be implying that since this forum doesn't cost us anything that it is free. ... So needless to say it hasn't been free.

Sounds like you have an expensive hobby. This game is free to play, and if you have the spare hardware and a connection now, with dnydns it's also free to host. Oh yeah and free to play, and free scripts...

Back in the 90's we had to pay to play, then it was $5 per player per month. And if we really appreciated the sysop and he needed hardware, we'd kick that in as well.

Moderators are human beings with just as much "invested" into this game as most, and therefore do have opinions. Do they get out of hand every once in a while? Of course they do.

Hardware aside, you still have to pay for your internet connection. In my case, that's an extra $50 per month for a high speed business connection. It's faster than a consumer cable modem, and has a static IP address. At some point, I would like to move it to a data center with a 7.5M fiber connection. That will cost about $150/Month, which is a lot less than it would have cost 5-10 years ago.

I'm just using my slow consumer cable connection, no static IP. No complaints so far, Kav even connects very well from Ireland.

I'd like to see how well it feels to an Ausie or a Kiwi.

Then again, I'm running classic games, not the unlims.

Just pointing out that it's not "Free" to host as that cable modem is costing you $15-$30 a month (or more).

DSL and Cable modems have speeds of 3mbps - 20mbps downstream. Cox cuminications has "Power Boost" which gives you up to 50mbps for a few seconds. This helps when streaming a movie as it makes nasty "buffering" at the beginning go away quickly.

The downside is that your players aren't using your downstream. They are using your upstream, which may be as little as .25mbps. The good news is that that is still enough bandwith for a lot of Tradewars players unless your downloading with bittorrent or other peer to peer downloading programs. While you are downloading, other people are downloading from you on your limited upstream.

As I would expect customers to act like customers. Bullying, lying, trolling, personal attacks and ultimatums are all unacceptable behaviors and should be treated as such. We have dealt with 99% of these behaviors just by removing the smack forum. We deal with the 1% left on a case by case basis. Are we always right? Of course not. The mods do take the responsibility and do the best they can. You can tell they are doing a decent job because they are doing the job.

This support forum is not supported by EIS but by the members themselves. Its always nice when John helps out but for the most part members help members.

H

You didn't remove the smack talk forum. It was Space Ghost that removed the smack talk forum. He did so because of members like you that couldn't smack talk effectively and everyone was making you look like a fool. The difference between you and Space Ghost is that he didn't use his admin privilages as a power trip like you have as a moderator.

I'd be paying for the cable whether or not I was hosting. Most anyone who's played this game has an old box around that will run TWGS. This isn't WoW or Eve, you don't need much more than desire to host a public server now.

Sure you can host a twgs on a crappy connection and a crappy server, but that doesn't mean anyone is going to play on a laggy server.

Since I run only Classic type turn/time limit games, the humans at the keys so far have had no complaints.

And actually Kav found the connection good from Ireland.

Now to get this thread back on topic.
Ender, it's very sad to see you leave Tradewars as so many others have done in the past for the exact same reasons. I entirely agree with you and know exactly what you mean. Hopefully the right person will finally realize this before Tradewars ends up as just another dead text game with a forum that has 500 inactive users.
