Unread post Active Community - Why no big games?
I've only recently come back within the last week or two... reading the forums and going from server to server looking for an active game with multiplayer players... dishearteningly so, there is not much out there (or atleast i've yet to find them).

So, this is what I don't really understand. There is atleast 30 active viewers/posters on this forum alone on a daily basis. And i'm sure there are other mediums out there where players can be notified/gathered. In the last tourney style game that was set up, only 3 teams participated. Why is this?

Are players not interested in the bigger, tournament style, games? Or is just the promoting and hyping of it not working?

Like I said, i've been gone for a loooong time... but what's the barrier that is preventing a tourney style game from happening again?

There are a few "tourney" games but they aren't very often. I don't, and won't, play tourneys/"big games" for various reasons - the main one is I disagree with botting a players turns away which is no more than glorified duping IMO. Hang around a while and there will be a tourney of some kind.

Also I'd like to add this. The current tournies consist of 1 or 2 established corps which discourages solo players and lesser qualified players from playing. There have been a couple of draft style tourneys that draw in these players, but for some reason the players of the established corps don't want to play them. I think these draft tournaments really help the player base get larger and more competitive for a few reasons.

1) Newer players get to work with the veterans and learn more.
2) Newer players get better scripts from the veterans.
3) Veterans get more and better qualified corpies and competition.
4) Tournaments get bigger and are much more fun.

There are big games all the time, it's just that people play them and get burned out
for a while and need a break. New players get in corps all the time, you just have
to take the initiative to find people to play with. Established corps often play in drafts,
they just prefer to play with people they know since it makes the game a lot funner.
One of the least fun things to have is a bunch of players that would rather not play,
and just turn on a bot and go away. A corp of crappy keytimers adds an order of
magnitude to the burnout factor, so established corps would prefer to have people
with decent keytime that understand the corp's playing style.

To further complicate matters, most people here like different game styles. So
you only end up with a small subset of players.

If they get the time limit bug fixed, that could help the two concerns listed above. Many players can play tournaments if they didn't have to stay at the keys 24/7 and could run their turns in a few hours. I'm still not sure exactly how they are going to stop the camping out at the game menu and watching the (high scores) screen. The TL bug is just one problem with time limit games.

Edit: One way to stop the camping out is if the "High Scores" display could be disabled. I mean whats the reason for it? For players looking to play a game to see what the status of the game is the only reason I could think of. In a tournament they already know if they are going to play it or not.

Even with a TL, there's enormous pressure to watch the monitor.

Players need the high scores list to see who is in what ship, and
how they're cashing.

IMHO, they shouldn't be able to see what's going on if they aren't in the game using time.

Yea, but then that means off-corp players will just relay info back.

Even if you disable that, you can still see who's logged into the game.

I don't want to turn this into a debate, but I think seeing who's in the game probably won't be sufficient enough information for a player to take a log in penalty to see what they are doing. Also there really shouldn't be any off corp players in a tournament game, and if they do happen to get into the game, they should be deleted on the 1st day if they don't get onto a corp. I know sometimes accounts are made for observers, but if the players would rather not have observers, they shouldn't be allowed.

There's no rule against having a solo corp sitting at terra, is there?

I used to use the "who's online" info all the time. You'd be surprised
how well it works. Not everyone grids all the time.

LOL. Most players would agree that one man does not a corp make.

I'm not really sure this discussion will make a difference anyway. Has anyone heard from JP? Is he even listening to our suggestions? Was the new TW revolution just a hoax?

Nod, probably. So then... exactly how many people would it take?

Last I heard he's busy with his newborn. Don't know what that means in terms of TW.

That's another thing that's changed. It's rare for big games to go that long. Most end in a month or two.
