I think the whole point of this thread is this -

If a newbie does not learn how to play the game by hand, how is he gonna learn to write a macro or script line of commands without knowing the keystrokes?

Many times, I do a sequence of keystrokes without even looking at my monitor because I don't even have to wait for the next prompt.

I can't say it enough - LEARN THE GAME VIA KEYSTROKES FIRST.

Darn script kiddies.

There is a critical distinction between knowing what a script does, and doing it by hand.

There's another critical distinction between just knowing the commands, and knowing how each
command and sub-prompt functions.

If you learn the game via keystrokes first, aka do it all by hand, you won't live long enough in
most games to learn anything else. There are some things you just cannot do by hand anymore.

So what? The keystrokes are only the tip of the iceberg. Yea you need to know what most of
them do, but that means absolutely nothing these days. You have to go beyond the keystrokes
to survive.

Actually I believe the whole point of the thread was to be scripts vs macros. The thread was hijacked for the purpose of promoting personal agendas.

As to your question how do you get new players to stop relying totally on WORLD-SST and other automated scripts. Well I think thats pretty simple, force them as the teacher you state you are to play turn based bangs. It's pretty simple actually take away the reliance and their forced to learn OR as has been the case time and time again they go Afk forever and make the teacher do all the work in game via *Bot.

As someone who groups with allot of newer players ive heard the many excuses and have seen far fewer others go onto learn more about the game and hold there own. How many players know what a figdecay is? Truces and Building games cater to a slower crowd who uses these "unique" server settings to build and then at the end of truce those players disappear till the next truce game. Why? Well in my opinion they don't know how to move past building and into offense (and other end of game strats/game mechanics) which in turn leads someone to be overly defensive or worse quit.

Oh and I think a combo of scripts and macros is the best offense because while macros can be faster there is definitely a thought processing delay that well-written scripts can and do overcome.

I just got off the phone with good friend and “Old School” player who’s adapted and uses Mombot now. I’m sorry, I just don’t ever see me using this. He explained how it’s used to “utilize” your teammates when they can’t be around to play, or you want to sleep in and not get up for extern in a highly competitive game. I’m sorry I’m calling it what it is, a dupe runner. I am very capable of competing against anything you’ve got going, I just want you at the keys.

I suggested that since “We” maybe not so excited about getting up at 3 am every night for a month or more straight, they let’s do the next best thing, set extern for 9-10pm EST!

As for the script kiddies, I refer to the ones who don’t know the game and just grab a script off Grimy and think they’re hot stuff. The last script kiddie I took in didn’t like that as a red I told him he was no longer allowed to hunt or grid, his only duty now was to turn a profit cashing. He responded by blowing up a planet, a loaded ISS and quitting the corp. I don’t have time for that nonsense! I will teach anyone who’s willing to listen and take direction. I’m NOT however going to use a Mombot to show them how it’s done. It’s the old give a man a fish or teach a man to fish philosophy of mine.

my question is, how did you come across to old boy who did you like that? most people dont like a 'my way or the highway' approach to a game they are learning... especially if they have had success on their own. its a game, its supposed to be fun. a lot of people find running the public scripts fun.

if mombot were a dupe runner people wouldnt have as much of a problem with it. no one wants to see their avatar run by someone else. of course, its on team unlims where mombot comes into its own. and as an aid, ive learned much about the game from learning how to effectively use the scripts. waaaay more than i learned from trying to come back by hand. not to mention the programming ive learned from looking at some of these guys work. how much of your problem is related to you getting sd'ed by scripters? or is it envy that you cant write them?

apologies if this is too smacky.

Willing to teach and not listen...I think you make a bad teacher.... and all your really doing is sending more sheep to the slaughter if you really believe in what your trying to sell...

Funny how your bagging on "script kiddies" yet they don't post...

I think It's the more "Ignorance is Bliss" that would apply to you and your posts

Therein lies the issue, I think cruncher is under the assumption that these users who grab public grimy scripts visit this forum on the regular and that just is not true.

Cruncher, outside this post most posts in this forum debate/talk about current public scripts new and old and how to improve on them. Scripting in itself is more time consuming and entertaining for most of use that visit this part of the forum then the game itself. Speaking strictly for myself I know if I didn't/couldn't script I likely would not have a game server, play or still be a semi active and contributing member.

I'm only stating the observastions I've had since returning 6 months ago. I'm here to learn how and why things have changed like they have. Kids don't understand that public scripts need tweeking. I write a few very, very simple macros with Zoc, and I've always been in awe of those who can code. I'd rather limp along with my own little macros than take the time to experiment learning someone else's. I spend more time at the keys playing the game, not writing and testing scripts. But to each his/her own.

Well, you do need some place to sell off to. Granted, it's usually done a day later, but
that's all stuff you need to teach people when they aren't using to doing megarobs
in a low turns startup.

We've all been there. Back in 2005 when I came back, I had no clue how to megarob.
But, someone said "don't worry, I'll do it, just watch." And after watching, ta-freaking-da,
I had it down.

Be forgiving of mistakes. Be a friendly coach. Show people. Let people do it with
guidance, then let them do it on their own. Repeat as needed. Not hard.

Which takes me to... comet, are you familiar with megarobs? I can go into some details
here if you've got any questions they didn't answer. Not everyone on here's an a**hole
to returning players.

Well I pretty much have it down now. As far as being evil I experimented with it and I really didn't take much interest with the megarobbing. I made good money though. Just not my cup of tea. However, I did join up with maniac and a few others on the Invitational. I am interesting in learning how they were doing CK refurb and Turbo SST. I would like to continue playing in turn games. I've ran into a couple of nice people that are answering my questions. So I guess my question is what's better. MEgarobb or SST? I've dabble with SST with mombot in unlimited games. however I always fine myself in a pod because I hit a cannon.. lmfao. If I have any questions I'll be sure to ask you. Thank you I appreciate it..
