Silver Wings was established before any other server currently active today listed at The Stardock.

The original TW code were purchased from Martech Software, Inc. (Gary & MaryAnn Martin) on June 27, 1996 and ran on a bbs called Silver Wings Game Server for about 2 or 3 years.

The original TWGS and gold codes were purchased from EIS (John P.) when the 1st version of TWGS was released and ran on a server in my home for another year or two.

The Silver Wings server was then moved to Andulsia, Alabama, where it ran on a T3 fiber connection and practically unlimited band width on the ISP Alaweb for 3 or 4 more years. The sysop at this time was Soul. Silver Wings TWGS was the most active server providing 80 nodes, hosting around 15 games, and accomodating 30 to 50 players on a constant basis. This was the original testing server for Xide when he produced TWX Proxy, the reverend when he made many of his original ZOC scripts, and earth when he was releasing Attac. The 1st round tournaments called ICE, Top Gun, and Lethal Lotto originated there.

Silver Wings was then taken offline for about 2 years and was moved back to my home. The server has been up and down a few times during the remaining time period because of a slowly fading player base and lack of intrest in Tradewars.

Today I am glad to see the players participating again, and Silver Wings TWGS will remain online as long as there are players interested in learning the game and participating at Silver Wings.

Happy Hunting at silverwingstwgs.com port 23

SilverWings sysop Soul was Convinced that a "Pay to/for Play" Twgs server would be a viable option..ofcourse it wasn't...Soul caused a Forum [tw2002] to close and the members of the forum created a new Forum [Tradewars] and the members put EleQ in charge of it so that he could keep SOUL out...I Will never forget the Horrible Events this Sysop put Eleq and The rest of the TW community thru..This happened right at the time of the First TW Convention..which was also by design of Soul to make trouble for the Forum while me and EleQ were unavailble. We came home from the TW Convention to Massive Email Bombs from a flame with Soul and other members of the forum. If anyone would like a TW History lesson about this Particualr Sysop..please let me know...I have Bookmarked different Posts from Soul in the Yahoo groups and the Events that Unfolded in that forum. SilverWings also Berthed the Phrase.. " Vote With your FEET "...and in the end..people did. Sorry Big D but i really don't think the past of SilverWings in regards to Soul is anything to be proud of...But thats just my opinion.

i dont think Soul being the sysop of the original silverwings is really important to his point of the history of silverwings :D

but since you brought it up.. what exactly was souls problem? why was he causin so much trouble?

Yes, there were a few controversies and major flame wars back then just as there are today. You have to admit Silver Wings was a very busy server at that time regardless of "pay to play/donation" whatever you want to call it.

I don't like to tell half truths so I included the entire history of Silver Wings and not just parts of it.

Also history does repeat itself, and if you didn't have that blanket over your eyes concerning one particular sysop, you'd see just what I'm talking about.

Actually I was the original sysop of Silver Wings. The codes were purchased by me. Soul had access to a very fast T3 ISP connnection is why the server was moved to Alabama. I was also tired of being a sysop at that time and he had local access and took over that job. He also had access to a local radio station and provided the 1st Tradewars radio interview station. It was fun participating in that online. A lot of people were interviewed live including Guardian, Bad Girl, Eleq, Space Ghost, Jackel, and many others. Souls problem was he thought that TW could be made pay to play, but never required it on Silver Wings. He did bang special request games for players that donated.

I can understand his way of thinking concerning the "pay to play" issue. A T3 connection isn't cheap to furnish for a server. As a matter of fact I think it was the only server that was ever ran on a T3 connection. If my memory is correct, it was around $125.00 a month to provide it.

This was not my problem with Soul. The pay for play issue was just one of an amazing litany of events that are of public record...I dont want to continue down this path too too far. My issue's are well docmented in a still accessible Yahoo Forum. If anyone wants more information please let me know privatly and i can send you to the appropiate links.

This was my favorite reply to the "Pay to Play" topic even though Hekate and I didn't agree on much.

Dude, 8 years old this stuff is. Dead and gone, some of these people are.

And 80 hours a week? Give me a break. Why would anyone want to work 80 hours
a week. When you start your entire argument off on a ridiculous assumption it's
really hard for others to take you seriously.

Anyway, pointless. There's not enough demand for pay to play. Never was, never
will be. Basic economics trumps all the self-righteousness you can muster.

For one, that wasn't my post. For another I never said pay to play would work. What I said was it's justifiable for a sysop to request donations and shouldn't get riduculed for it. I still agree with that.
I don't plan on asking for donations, mainly because it is a hobby, and I don't have a lot invested in running my server. Now if a player wants to comment about lag or the time I invest in running it, they can send me a weekly check and I'll accomadate their needs in compliance with the amount of cash they send. :P

I dont know how to respond to that, but I will try.

Oh to be a kid again with out a care in the world. To sit and play my video games with utter disgregard for tomorrow. Im not sure what you youngenz call "work" now adays but 12 hr's of back breaking labor sucks. Im sure 12hr of "would you like fries with that" sucks too, mostly bad when the "heaters" go out and your "freezing your Butt off" once your "allowed" back at work, im sure BK might offer you a little more $ since you have all that exp. Im guessing your worth more then min wage, thats 7.25 and hr now! they may even put you in the 8.50 range. just think you will be pullin in 680 before taxes in a week! Darn your good Loc. I look up to you. ;)
