I would like to announce the establishment of a new tradewars gold server. The address is TWGSGOLD.servegame.com, available 24/7 on port 23 (telnet) from Indianapolis, Indiana.

I have a website under development as well, but I am working more on the custom game design side for the time being. The games are typically designed to be "turtle" games, long-term building games that lend themselves to long term strategy rather than quick victories and re-bangs. Two games are currently available, both true stock, differeing pretty much only by the size of the universe. If anyone out there still enjoys the longer-term play style, give us a look!

For the technical side, I bought a used HP DL470 G3 with dual Xenon processors, dual power supplies, and hot-swap scsi drives. I packed it with 6 GB of Ram and 5 Nics and then proceeded to load it with ESXi. I used PFsense 1.2.2 as a virtual appliance for a firewall, router, and DHCP solution in the virtual environment. I then built out several XP virtual machines to run various game servers for myself and my son. A true all-in-one-box solution to live game serving. Tradewars is the first to be implemented.

If you are looking for a more relaxed environment for building and re-exploring the olden days of Tradewars, this is the place! (although this does not mean there won't be tons of custom edit games as well!)

And from a technical perspective... you aren't going to need a server like that for TW unless you're running a kajillion alien games, at which point the software will start crapping bricks long before you run out of ram.

What kind of pipe are you on?

Well, like I said, it is designed to be quite a bit more than a Tradewars server. The virtual machine handling Tradewars thinks it has a mosquito running on in it's virtual system.

My pipe is a standard home DSL, I may consider kicking it up for some of the future game environments. But The DSL seems just fine to handle the puny little telnet packets I currently require of it.
