Unread post New 'Training Game' Idea
I know that many servers out there offer a 'new player training game' of some sort, but I have come up with an idea that I think would be kewl. My idea was to have things like death delay off so people could play around with different attack scripts against each other, come back in and switch attackers. Have several alien planets that are set (and posted with strength levels and locations) so that people could work on invasion.... And have some of the more senior players available to work with the newer players as 'teachers' to help them learn how to use some of the scripts, as well as help them with basic stuff (how to load mombot... etc.. this was a challenge for me specifically)...

Y City Connection has volunteered to host the game. Thank you very much Y City!! Now we need a couple players that would be interested in donating some time (when needed) to 'hold classes'... and after a few days of practice, the teachers can take there 'class corp' up against each other.... (that is if we generate the interest in the classes from the new players)

If anyone has any interest, please let me know.... Jimdorsin@yahoo.com (Yahoo Im Jimdorsin)

Well as a new player (although I've technically played on and off for over a decade) that totally sucks, I wouldn't mind getting some instruction from some of the vets.... So count me in.

not that it means much but im going to give my .02 anyway.

I can see the unlimited in the begining, but once people start getting basic stuff down its time to learn some terns. then move up to an unlimited. they tend to be fast pasted and real hard for new peopel to learn in. most unlimiteds sould read, not for new players fro this reason, even a truce. a truce give give a more experianced player how ever many days to build stuff. meh i coudl go on but.....

I appriciate the input... and I thank you all for your ideas.... the purpose of the gmae is to teach new players how to use (and I mean real new players) and load dif scripts... how to set up the bot (this was hard for me to get to work) how to invade... lol basic stuff... Once we can get the masics down, and we have some people that are interested in treaching, Then I bet Destro would bang specific games based upon what the teachers were trying to teach at that point in time....

Lets say that Kane had 2 students... and SG had 2.... they wanted to work on a non truce small turn game with strong aliens...well guess what... thats what is provided (assuming that Destro is good with this.... ) Its all up to specificly what the people teaching what to teach, and those that are learning wnat to be taught.... I am simply attempting to help bring more players to the site, and Destro is providing a platform for others to learn...

Please keep the info, comments, and ideas comming...

(please understand... I am a noob... I am just trying tohelp build the site, and I DO NOT speak on behalf of the site... just ideas that Destro hase given me SOME leash torun with....lol I am not affiliated with Ycity as any type of admin or athority...just a player that wants to see the site grow)

Your ideas are good. Daala and I tried that on our TradeWars Academy site. The problem (not to be negative) is getting the players to be in the game at the same time. Most players have hectic schedules, especially during Christmas, or work/school commitments throughout the entire year.

I offer another idea for yourself to think about. It's the same platform Daala and I have here. We run a game called TradeWars Academy (Game B) and have our OCSBot in the game. This bot is a script for TWXProxy (courtesy of Promethius for coding the core) and contains various aspects of the game. When a user is in the game and wants to use the bot for information, they can communicate with it on a specific SS channel. A menu comes up with the choices for each section. We are trying to cover all aspects of the game so a player can quickly look up the information in-game. They need info on items like the various keys at StarDock, planets, citadels, etc it is available to them. We've now started to compile a tactical side to the script with the various tricks and strategies by various players.

Working in conjunction with the script in-game, we also provide the same information (more in detail) in our TradeWars Academy section of our website. This way if a player is not too certain on comprehending the instructions, they can view online tutorials with screen shots of the specific section, etc. So the site works with the script and gives players two places to get the details and instructions. I know of six players that have used it and the feedback was very positive.

The plus side to our method is that it it a script and a website that do the work of providing the information. We don't have to try to get "instructors and students" to meet together with hectic schedules. I can add to the script any area I want. I can also add to the website any content and go in depth for the new players.

The negative side to our method is that there is little player-player interaction as far as teaching/learning. Some people can learn better from other people. Another issue is that in order to use the bot, players need to be able to set their SS channel to the specific channel # of the bot. If they are unsure, they have to look at our site or other sites to find out how to set SS channel.

Outside of that, it has worked well for us. With our schedules, it was hard to coordinate instructors and students so we went this route. With scripting and ideas, you can create a good game for learning. Daala started out using the OCSBot and after completing her own game, moved on to other sites where she faired well. I know of another team (Harkov and Himron) that used our OCSBot and site to learn and they too have faired pretty well. I'm not saying that our approach will make players the best. Our site strives to teach the basics. Once they have that under them, then we encourage them to try other sites with players to apply what they have learned.

This is an insight on what we did here to give you a different look at how to accomplish your idea.

You have a good idea so don't give up on it. It is sometimes the new person that sees things in a light that those that have been around for a while no longer see, or never saw.

Jim,

I think your idea is pretty good and myself and Vidkid/Caretaker will volunteer our knowledge and help any newbies in the game. We have already established what we need to help (resources).

Our schedules vary and can accommodate almost all time zones.

If anyone is interested in teaching or learning or trading tactics, please contact me via icq 24969402 or by yahoo/msn redlude2k@yahoo.ca

One thing that will make the learning experience better is if someone has a mic and joins us on teamspeak.

A few suggestions to the SYSOP:

Make the game a high turns game like 50k turns - will teach people about photons and how to use little turns
Make the corp size 30 or more - will allow people to collaborate and not have to compete against each other.

I will be banging a CLOSED Training game on Saturday December 22, 2008 @ 7 PM EST. If you are intersted in being a MENTOR or a TRAINEE leave me a private message with user name and password and I will insert you into the game. This will be a Subzero edit, 20,000 sectors - Unlimited turns per day - 10 to a corp (once in the game, you must join a corp) - Teach them right cause Death Delay will be on. Thanks
