 Re: UTW rules...
Quote: I know exactly what you mean about truce games, because the fig hits drive me nutz. I also agree that maybe at times the rules are enforced selectively, but then again I don't believe it is always on purpose. There is no sysop out there, including me, that could keep track of that many games with that many different rules effectively. So, I don't think that the rules are intentionally being enforced unequally. If UTW and its sysops are guilty of anything, it would be lack of time and confusion caused by too many rules imposed on too many games in too many different ways. Laff, I turn off messages if I'm forced to play thru a truce. On the rare occasion I get into one on the last day of the truce (usually turning cash into figs, getting planets ready for defense, etc) I'm usually flying pretty blind until the hits clear up. Ppl know to ICQ/Skype me if I'm needed. Anyway I don't expect most sysops to police their server. Quite the contrary, I think players should be self enforcing. If you break a game rule, let the players (of any team, or all of them) band together and take you out. If we didn't tolerate BS then ppl would get a taste of the downside and stop doing it. There are obviously times when player enforcement isn't enough, like if someone on the other team is hacking into t-edit or DDoSing their router to keep you offline (I've seen it happen!), but for most situations it works well enough. But games where the sysop starts to play rule maker you get this gray area where suddenly everyone looks to the sysop for disputes. That's dangerous ground because it puts him/her into the position of being judge+jury+executioner, and everyone comes to expect enforcement. It's even more so when players (like myself) report probable infractions (like repeated duping for tactical purpose) and get ignored. If I go to the trouble of gathering up enough info to report a dupe, and the sysop does nothing about it but continues to enforce the rule in other games... it's going to leave a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially since I rarely bother to report them. More rules = More trouble Add selective or lazy enforcement into the mix and the trouble grows. All and all this thing is just a game... and I don't need that kind of stress, nor do I have any desire to deal with liars and cheats that can't win an honest game.

 Re: UTW rules...
I don't have a whole lot to say here other then the fact that i've played to many games to count on UTW and never had an issue. Granted i don't and will not play truce games, but i'd assume that regardless of the server truce games are a pain in the Butt.
I think UTW does an excellent job of maintaining all of its games especially when they usually bang a game almost every night of the week sometimes 2. Also sages icq is available to anyone that wants it, he icq's everyone on the list early in the day to inform people of upcoming games.
And i was under the impression that sage is extremely aproacable when it comes to game issues. I assume he gets tons of icq's a day and normally if i have a issue or a question and he's online i get a reply back within 10 minutes tops.
I spose that makes me one of his boys right? If so not sure why I don't do anything that benefits him any.
My 2 cents. Irregardless you either play there or you don't, no use in arguing over this especially now that pat has the answers they were looking for.

 Re: UTW rules...
I've been playing on UTW for several months now and have seen no sign of any unfair treatment of any players by Sage. He seems to run a good server with a lot of good games, and he seems to do it about as fairly as could be possible.
I do like the truce games because it eliminates any advantage that people can have by being the first into the game. I would prefer that they were less than 3 days, though.

If I get in first I can cash longer and build longer, I'll have a bigger advantage on planets and come truce end... I'll have the mobiles and you won't. All it does is prolong the inevitable.

Yea I agree about the planets for sure. I just had my butt handed to me because I was trying to battle enemy from a lvl 4 planet and they had lvl5 plus. It was bad, I shouldve left the sector but not much of a runner so I stayed and fought if you want to call it that. Other corp had a field day torping me in my pod... talk about fun stuff...laff

Don't get me wrong... I don't mean people getting in like a day or more earlier.. I'm just refering to a matter of hours difference.. I won't bother to play a game if I can't get in on day one.

Truce games only prevent some butthead from locking down an unlim b4 comp shows up....A lockout is not a win and just wastes the sysops time in bamging to begin with and good players dont need to do that lockout crap.

And truce games let players live for 3 days without any skill, doing their base building and talking trash on fed com...... Many to only leave at truce end or turtle... In a truce game, you have to be at keys the last few hours before the end to grid and then to move your base. A truce is the opposite of the non-truce in regard to the critical time to be actually at keys. Non-truce at the start to get going, truce at the end of the truce period. I dislike truces for that very reason - if I want to play a game, I don't want to be bored to death for 3 days (about 2 days too long for a truce) only to fall to an AFK invasion or lose 90% of the grid.

Uh dude, you just described a lock out and now you're saying it's crap? Laying down figs and going deep red to force your enemies deep blue is just another form of lockout. Granted it's less effective than just blockading dock, but the end result is the same... either the players are smart enough to bypass it or they aren't, you can't protect someone from dumb play. Or they just violate the truce anyway knowing it won't matter.

 Re: UTW rules...
Exactly. Truce games will still end up with the same result as a non truce game. The better players will prevail. The only thing a truce game does, is let less experienced players stay in the game for the length of the truce and passify them. They don't learn invasion, they don't learn attack skills, they don't even learn how to cash since most of them start a script and go about thier business at home. What they do learn is how to whine, when they get invaded and killed almost immediately after the truce is over.
