Why does the above sound like a derogatary remark?
Well because it kind of is. I mean some servers have people playing in 3 or 4 games until truce ends, then they move to the next game. This makes it seem like there's 60 players, but in reality there's only 15 or 20... and none of them can make it past a truce. That doesn't mean the games are all that popular, it just means that the same set of people play in all of them.
I suppose if they just reallllly enjoy warping around, killing single figs, and porting and PPTing for 3 days... maybe building a base that's going to get plastered, well ok then. But with all of that, why not just start your own local server and do everything from the deadly eyes of other players?
It seems to me that if a person is going to play for years they ought to atleast get some mastery of it. Just seems kind of sad that they don't, but it happens all of the time.
Why do they do it? I don't really know. I think some of them just hope to get lucky. Some will mouth off to other players for the ego boost, then die quickly. Some might be trying to learn, and that's great. But I think most just do it because it's the only way they can stay in a game.
Don't get me wrong, we all (myself especially) all get plastered from time to time, but rather than treating as something to avoid... I treat it as something to learn from. Just seems kindof sad I guess.

There is nothing wrong with playing those types of games as such. I think Sing, and myself, look at seeing players develop and become a threat. Not just build a base for 3 days and then leave when the truce is over. Some stick around and play, but their ship-to-ship abilities leave them at a disadvantage - not all as there are exceptions, but speaking in general.
I *WISH* they'd become a threat. The problem is a person can only rise to the level of their challenges. That's true of everything in life, and no less true here. That's why it bugs me when I get into a truce game and see so many players just... not doing much. It makes it that much harder for me. That's why I always try to hit up old players, get ideas from them, try to get them back into the game, etc. I have a small list of players I'd *LOVE* to play against. I'd prolly get my butt handed to me, but I guarantee I'd learn a lot from it.
But am I going to just sit on my butt and let them run over my grid and stuff? No way. If they're halfway decent they'll know how to fight back. Never accept the "I'm a newb" excuse. Let a newb in and you'll find they aren't, and a few hours later you're in for a struggle that should never have happened. Fight hard... really hard. Swim in your enemy's blood!
