I seem to have a problem.. My work password for internet access will allow me to go to any website I want.. but.. when I try to telnet .. it just stalls out. Like the firewall might be configured to allow web.. but no telnet. Does anyone have any experience with this?

What browser are you using at work?
If its internet explorer 7, you may have to dl a patch to allow telneting.

Its IE 6. something I believe.   Seems to me thats its something to do with the firewall.   I can only seem to access web pages.. Nothing happens through telnet. Even when I try to use such things as the built in Internet Checkers/Chess/Spades or whatever it may be... when trying to connect.. it just sits and tells me a connection cannot be found.

If you're not the IT staff, then they've probably turned off port 23. Have you tried connecting to servers that run on port 2002?

Outpost-4 ran something like that.
It might still be up, but it would connect to their own server to play.

Which server are you trying to connect to?

well.. when you type in telnet in your browser.. it usually brings up (unless you have another telnet program setup as default) the default dos telnet window.

ive tried several servers.. none work.

We still run both the Java telnet and Kokua telnet helpers. The java telnet is configured to connect to our TWGS.

The telnet problem is simple. Try to connect to other servers and their ports. If you can't connect, then telnet is blocked. Seen it on many networks.

work at work 50% of the time consists of sitting here trying to find something to do. the boss loves when we have to do this...because..when we are in the break room..that means everything is running...when everything is running he is making money. the more we sit..the more money he makes. it doesnt bother us either... other than the bordom part sometime.. which is why im trying to figure out why port 23 is blocked... who would do such a thing!

the Java application from Outpost4 seems to use the same principle... telnet just locked up. ;(    I will have to fire the IT guy.

I guess logmein is along the same lines as VPN? Such as programs like UltraVNC, TightVNC, etc?
