What's the TWA Database project?
Anyway, glad it's helpful.  I'm trying to decide now whether to release a gold edits exporter with just ships and planets (since hardly anyone uses the gold aliens anyway) or finish it up with the aliens too and then release it.  It only took me two hours start to finish to implement the planet reader, so it wouldn't take that long to add the aliens (though they're a little more complicated, with all the oddball formula selections).
And then of course I have to wrap it all up in a releaseable package (right now there's not even a menu, I manually tell it what game to parse and recompile LOL) and somehow make it all readable together.  I'm thinking about making the ships 5 columns like the planet thing I just posted; it'd mean anyone with lower than about 1280x1024 resolution may not be able to see it correctly but a full game of edits would become a lot shorter.
I may have to add the ability to output to an XML file as well, so folks can make up a style sheet to be able to post the stats on a website.  HTML is one thing I haven't done before, but I can learn.

Many of the popular edits use the gold aliens, its the internal aliens that are not used much

Looks like ~99% of the edits I have in the data base are Gold and  ~half of those use aliens.

Info on the TWA Database Project

Guess things have changed from an alien standpoint.  Of course, they used to be too buggy to use reliably so now that most of that is fixed they're probably worth using.
I wish I knew much about SQL databases.  I could probably very easily whip something up to just convert the TW databases to SQL databases.  I'm already reading all the data (and it takes <1 second per game to read *everything*, it's raw access), I'd just need to know what format to write it back into.
And here it is, the default ship/planet gold files, in all their splendor.  I'll have to time how long it takes the server to process this...

It's all in raw form right now; I'll of course clean up some of the numeric data that looks up to a list (like the spawn bits, 0 = Linear1, 1 = Linear2, ... 4 = Linear5, 5 = Static, 6 = Custom, 7 = Parabolic, 8 = Exponential), and remove the unused data (like custom, parabolic, and exponential aren't used right now, and the strings are used by custom so they're basically unused as well...I have no idea what would happen if you tried manually putting data in the files for those LOL).  I'll also try to change some of the weird names to match what Tedit calls things ("Criminal" vs. robs/steals, "SupplyTrain" vs, well, I *think* that's just trades at ports, but what an odd name ).

I will try to work on the white space handling on the forum for you, and get earth to look into it as well, being he is more familiar with asp, than I am.

That'd be awesome.  The issue is that spaces in code tags randomly get broken & n b s p ; tags and just ;'s sometimes in them, and the number of spaces is inconsistant (with 9 spaces, it only comes out with 8; with 10 spaces, it randomly jumps from 14 to 12 to 9 and has various &nb sp; crap).  Basically multiple spaces just go completely FUBAR in code tags, and they're kinda the whole point of using code tags.   I suspect the code is trying to replace multiple spaces with tabs in some way and really doing a poor job of it.  I'd rather it just leave spaces as they are.
There's also the issue of the additional space that appears in lines that go over 60 characters, but that's far more minor than the above issue.
If you guys can fix those, the formatting will get a lot less time-consuming to post.  Right now, a moderate sized edit with ship, planet, and alien data is going to take about 3 minutes to parse after hitting Post Reply.  Luckily once parsed people *viewing* the post don't have to wait any real amount of time for it to display, but I'd rather sysops didn't have to sit around so long after posting their data.

Ah ha. Using the WYSIWYG editor avoids the bugs, but turning off the WYSIWYG editor (which defaults to off, for that matter) causes it all to bug out like I saw before. Should help you fix things to know it's only a problem with the standard post editor.

Okay we will try to work on it, I will alert earth and see if we can get the issue with white spacing fixed.

also the long time to post the data from the exporter is due to how the forum handles the database, I am working on changing the database engine from access to mysql if the portal program handles mysql.

Well, if the whitespace problem were fixed, the database issue wouldn't be an issue, really.  There are about 20 color codes per line that would be eliminated if I didn't have to print black rows of dots between data.

btw, the way you make certain settings 'black' when they are disabled means that these settings cannot be transferred to plain text, e.g. .txt files (notepad). i understand that is a design choice, but i hope you are aware that it severely limits portability of the game settings.

overall i think it looks pretty good. i hope the spacing issues on the forum are resolved soon.
