Couple things... First off, there is a lot of code in XP that has changed. Services is just one of them.
I've run TWGS on XP Pro (not as a service) and run into problems. Of course, I've run it with a bunch of other junk running, so I'm not a decent test case.
That said, you may also want to look into the new UI. There are sometimes problems with the overlay of the new UI over existing applications. I'm not sure if TWGS is doing any custom UI stuff, but if you're not using comctl32.dll, then that may be part of the problem.
Running it as a service looks like it may definitely be a problem.
Also, running on .NET is a little different. First off, .NET is XP with a whole bunch of patches applied. In addition, the themes manager is disabled by default (although you can enable the service and it seems to work fine)... For now, I would probably consider them to be 2 different platforms.

This is microsoft's way of making you buy new compilers all the time... Better Upgrade to Visual Studio .NET for the XP Platform..
AARRGGHH another 300 bucks if you own Visual Studio 1000 if you dont.

The MS Windows SDK comes with a compiler. I'm pretty sure the SDK is a free download. You don't get a fancy GUI editor, but it does the job-and i figure that a clever person could probably shove the new compiler in to old versions of visual studio. =)

New install of XP and have tried to uninstall and re-install. Still get the same errors. This also interfers with some installs of other programs. While tradewars is running (in the task bar as a service) some installs that use INSTALLSHIELD will just "hang" "stop" until I shutdown tradewars.

The installation of other programs is also a problem in W2K too. It is a problem with 16bit installation programs. If the program uses a 32bit installation program, then you will not have a problem. My suggestion is this: either don't run as a service in XP or turn off the service and then uninstall the service. Then install your new program. Then reinstall as a service and turn it back on.
Otherwise you will have problems installing anything with 16bit installation programs.
I have already notified JP about this before .55 came out. And had since given him more info on my tests with installations programs. Hopefully sometime soon JP will take care of this.

Just like to chime in and say I've had all these problems as well. When using TWGS as a service on my XP Pro, it will always crash on exit. I don't get any crash bugs doing anything else with the server, only when exiting. And I, too, cannot install anything with a 16-bit installer (including the TWGS Tools from this very site ;>) while the TWGS service is running, whether or not the server itself is on or off.

How do you deal with the multiple instances of 'nonpserv.exe'?

Those would be your alien servers one for each race .. if you don't like it .. dont run aliens ?
They are just part of the program .. nothing to worry about.

i had a nonpserv.exe go nuts on me last night - started consuming 100% cpu. i exited twgs and it still kept running - had to kill it with task manager. i don't like running aliens, but some people like them so i just keep it to a minimum.
