Hey some of you long time players i was thinking when i get my server setup of starting a game that for predetermined amounts players can upgrade things. Like planet production or ship holds. Just about anyhting could be updated if for a price once agreed upon from all players. Let me know what you think of this idea. I was reading some ship info and like half the ships were bad for trading and not really any good for anyhting else. So give me some ideas. What a ship should be edited to and what the new max could be once upgraded.

that would get complicated, because every single ship would have to be set up as a new alien deralict. It could be done, but it'd be a HUGE pain to you. Plus, my old favorite of "never touch tedit on a game being played" is always there too.
But, my opinion would be, for you, it would be a huge hassel.
It does however remind me of an add on for twars way back when (early 90's) that was set up outside of the twars, but on the bbs, where you could log in, and spend credits to do things like gather information on enemies, etc.. was neat.

I was thinking more like the end user ship would be upgraded to a pre set max i would take x no. of crdits and that users ship would get upgraded however was decide. not a system wide upgrade all at once but each asset would be upgraded individually.

Ya, which is why you'd have to use alien deralicts, which means each time someone upgrades a new ship, you'd have to make a new ship

Zentock has worked something out in that regard for special games ongoing at Vulcan's Forge.Im sure he can speed up the process for you.

Why would you not be able to upgrade the ship the user has not all ships at once. Set a limit for every ship and planet at start of game and once a user has reached that then that is it. i don't see why each ship has to be decalict ship.

1) the game provides no such limit for users.
2) the upgrades you're talking about would require changing the ship type. Ship data is stored by ship type (it says "Type of ship" in the ship record). Ie: That ship's data is linked to one of the defined ship types. Any upgrades done to that ship type would effect all players and all of those ships currently in use. You cannot edit an individual ship's maximum holds, TPW, max figs, etc. Changes must be done to the entire ship type as the game's data structure provides no other way.
If that is acceptible then no, you don't need to do anything fancy with the ships. Just set whatever criteria for the upgrade and then t-edit at will. That will, however, effect the balance of gameplay tremendously... which may upset some players.
If however you do want individual upgrades then you would have to do some individual ship types for every single upgrade in the game. That would be a lot of work for sure.

Can you not edit a ship by the user that is in it.
And on a side note what would make some of the ships more balanced i have read stuff and it seems some ship rarely if ever are used bad combat bad at trading.
Should we start a new topic or talk in this one.
I am looking at starting some games but was wondering whaat would make them more balanced

No, you can not edit a ship by the user that is in it.
Pretty much whatever you do, nobody will really use "all" the ships in a game, unless you don't make that many ships.
It's just not feasable.
If you want to make a balanced edit, the key is to know how people are going to play it, and then do a little math.
