Vulcan does not mean cash, ship, or planets.
he means the points earned for there play in other games will
carry forward to the next game, these points do not effect the game they mearly reflect that specific players rank in the grand scheme of the tradewars universe.
A way to truly know whos the best at what they do.
That makes sense, but I hope it tracks game rank, and player rank seperate. Just because he's got good stats, doesn't mean he's doing best in the game.

Pay to play will be for players who want to participate in a constant rank assessment, and to ensure that players know who they are playing with/against. Players will register there nicks, and no one will be able to pirate it as long as the subscription is kept current, no playing under multiple names will be allowed as registration will require specific information.
The rank assessment will be for prizes based on points earned over an x period of time, the prizes may include $, or bonus time and or admittance to special tournies. And yes rank assessment is not counted in the specific game a player enters but is a subtotal reflection of a players cumulative point totals based on multiple game participation and game skill level.
What I mean is a game with low participation will yeild low pts to the victor, unless the difficulty of that specific game is higher then normal, but it will still yeild a lower point reward then a game with a lower level of dificulty with a higher participation level, So as you can see there will be more at stake to compete in a twt sylian sponsored game then just bragging rights.
So polish up Your helpers and sort out you scripts ( some will need to be worked on to be functional ), but we are TradeWarriors and this change will only be another obsticle we must demolish to the path of Universal Dominance!!!!
We as a community will not held back from the call to glory!

From what I understood, scripts and helpers wouldn't work with the new version. Has that changed?

As always ways to get done what needs doing will be discovered and the game will go on, those who figure it out will want there piece of glory and thoses who cant/dont/wont figure it out will have to pay homage to those who do to get what they know.
Kinda like tradewars is today, but the gap will be more visable, and you can bet what is shared will be consumed as fast as it gets posted.
The cream will rise to the top for the first few games then the data will start to leak out to the masses and the tide will turn.
It will become a war of numbers meaning he who has the most enemies will loose faster then he who has the most friends, What do you know that is also kinda like it is today.
So in the end nothing will change except the numbers and the quality of play, which will only elevate as the stakes go up.

I am a TW addict. Ive tried to stop. It doesnt work. I have accepted this fact.. and have learned to be happy with it. This involves most aspects of the game.
I also like to play "out of the box" games.. like Eve. Although I dont see anything ever taking the place of a good Ole TW pod session (whether given or taken). So.. I would play this so called TW spinoff. I doubt it will take the place of the original. So.. I dont see any harm in playing it.
Those of us who are here almost on a continual (is that a word?) basis know that we will still be here for the next bang.

I filled out the survey, then in the remarks block put in "please do not stop supporting the current game" Wanna bet I never play the new one? Then again, I can only play this one on Sundays now, hmm....

Like Zen said the new version will take the players game stats, IE his ranks and points and apply it to the other games so players will know basically how long the player has played, what rank he has gained, and the points he has earned to apply to specials that will be advertised for the game, this is only on the pay game, the shards are for the players that like to play the game for free, and each shard can create the universe as the sysop see's fit, and has the game play the way he sets it up.
But the stats, points, and so forth will not transfer to the main pay server, there you will start over unless you already have an account there then you will pickup where you left off.
Also the main pay game server will have special tournes, games and other things available that aren't on the free shards.
All in all, the pay and free game servers will offer a whole range of different things to the players for an overall game experience in the new TWT games and the classic TW game we know now.
Free games for those who like them or can't afford to pay for the main game, and still get some of the game experience of the pay game for free.
The pay game will offer things for players that play there that can only be given out there, like some free game time, special tourney access or other benifits from point standing or rank standing.
There will always still be the old TW as well, what JP is trying to do is make the game the way he envisioned it to be and keep the old as well for those who want it, and try to make a whole new community for them both and merge them so the true community will be larger by a whole.

Being relatively new to Tradewars 2002, I might have the wrong perspective. Having said that, I think the one thing that will keep Tradewars 'alive' is if the powers that be leave it alone --much like they have for a long time.
There's nothing wrong with developing a new Game, based-on or inspired from... whatever. I think the real issue here is: Investor Satisfaction. Call me a pessimist, but I think Tradewars was left alone for a long time for a reason. Now, it would seem interest by it's creators has been sparked by a third party who can do and fund the actual programming and take 'creative-direction' from the creators --not with standing input from Test-Audiences who will have final input. Does this mean Tw2002 is dying?
Is this the first step to a TradeWars 2010 - The Wendies Movie Mega Deal... probably. As long as the Movie is good and does not star Jar Jar Stinks; I look forward to seeing it; but this mean Tw2002 is dying?
The only real advantage of playing a new game inspired-by/based-on Tradewars 2002, will be that for a few RL pennies.. err DOLLAR$, I’ll be able to purchase Photons in many designer colours, SAVEME will equate to roadside assistance with a membership fee, and include some not toooo obvious product placements (I foresee a Mercedes Escape pod, which holds two comfortably and comes with nifty earmuff-headphones). Again, does this mean Tw2002 is dying?
Keep Tradewars alive? Who said it was dying? How about promote and merchandise a little bit.. Who wouldn't want an authentic TradeWars 2002 Coffee Mug, or a T-Shirt: Help, I've been Photon'd and I can't get up, call 1-976-SAVEME!

I love tradewars.
I've taken a long break on and off for the past 3 years as many of you know, mainly, cuz I like going out when its nice outside, and also... I'm tired of straining my eyes for hours on end watching 3 computers play TW.
Do I want to lose TW? no... But, I have to say to lonestars comment about keeping tw alive by leaving it alone.. bro, we've seen tons of players come and go over the years, some of the most 'uber leet' out there, have left...
I think going graphical will be the best thing ever happen to the game, would I pay to play it? Absolutely. As long as its worth it. I won't pay a monthly fee to play a web-based game like the millions that are already out there.
I'm waiting, patiently for this, and I put my number in the hat last year to be a part of the beta test team....
Will it be worth it?
Guess you'll have to find out.
