People just want a game they can have fun in. Make it too big of a pain in the butt and it may appeal to curiousity but the vast majority of people won't play more than maybe once.
Easy edits tend to be fun, so people play easy edits.

Sing is right. Basically, your average TW player doesn't and can't appreciate "different" edits. The requirement to think is not appreciated by some.

I hate to have to agree with you again, been doing too much of that lately, but you are right. Difficult games, read cashing/building, makes for slower games that a lot of people don't like. I am playing in a (shudder) turn game and having to setup SDT with refurb is a major change from the unlims I usually play.
My main problem isn't the difficulty of a game, rather the time required for a solo player to get going (time per day mainly). Time limitations are also a primary reason I stay away from games with delays in them.
Making an edit fun has to strike a compromise between the instant super ships/lvl 6 planets with 1:1 fighters of some edits and the pure stock version.
As always, what is fun for one player is like going to the dentist for another. Make edits you (the sysOp/gameOp)want and let others adapt.

I'm trying out some new edits on my site, and sofar I hear;
1 To hard to get started.
2 If you change (item inserted here) I'll play
3 My scipts don't work well unless.. (that was the point)
20 people come and check it out. 2 take it serious and play. The rest just CBY.
I'm not having good luck with edits that arn't normal, but personally that's what I'm looking for. (Something different)
I'm a new sysop, and my edits prolly do suck, but I'm trying!
You will not be able to please everyone. People what this or that so they can play the game better, not make it more fair. I do have to say that the rob/steal delay is bad.[:D]

I think in general you'll get edits that are fun for different groups of people, but it's dang near impossible to please everyone.
I dislike a lot of resource management, I do it when needed but I prefer the hunting and killing aspect of the game... especially when I've got other people trying to counter my punches. So I tend to play edits with strong, usually lightweight, ships and where the planets do most of that work for me. Some people enjoy the exact opposite tho and would love nothing more than bringing up excel, calculate the most turn efficient way of furbing and cashing and cloaking out in the knowledge that they've made 500k more than me.
A lot of people enjoy doing neither. They want to come in the evening for a few hours, move around, build their planets, cash a little... basically a tradewars buffet. Sampling a little of each and then logging out.
To each their own, of course. If you can make an edit that appeals to all of the major personalities... well, that'd be crazy popular. If not, then stick with the group you know the most about and build for them. Someone's bound to play it if you can get a sysop to host it.

Hmm, a buffet, that brings up an idea for the casual game like you mentioned. I'm going to work on that.
