Please note.....This is the General Discussion section, not SMACK!
Can we stick to topic, please?
Just as this is the official EIS forum, I think the TW Awards should be the official TW Awards. I know that Gypsy ran them from this site a few years back.
Maybe JP has reasons for not doing them 'officially'. If he does, I'd be curious about his reasons.
I know the Awards are flawed. I know that many consider them a popularity contest. I have seen problems with them almost every year, but I have continued to vote in them because they are tradition. I would like for them to regain the respect they deserve.
I am suggesting the following:
1) that the moderators of this forum and JP decide who is to run the TW Awards
2) that the person or persons running the awards not be eligible for any of the awards
3) that each award have a description and that it be posted well before the nominations and available year round
4) that the rules not be changed in the middle of the election
5) that voters in the election must have had an account at eis in advance of the election
I am also offering to help in any way I can.... even if that is straining my eyes over a list or whatever.

Finally someone who agrees with me on the TW Awards, I didn't mind helping ender with them, but I too feel they should stay with the official place they started, and would like to get them back on that track too.

The awards were as follows.
1996 – 1997 hosted by Gypsy
1998 hosted by Gypsy
1999 hosted by Wookie
2000 hosted by Fuseblown & Phoe6e
2001 hosted by Gypsy
2002 hosted by CK
2003 hosted by CK
2004 hosted by CK
2005 hosted by Vulcan
Looks like Gypsy started them and after looking at the categories for the fist TW awards looks like they were mostly based on recognizing servers with one for a helper and anther for hall of fame?
Can anyone guess who won hall of fame in the first TW awards?

Duh,
Gary Martin
Then Targa/Stardock BBS
Then John Pritchett
Then EleqTrizi'T
Then Guardian
Then Rave
Then Jerry/Oldtimer (Coastgames)
Then Xide / TWX Proxy
Then Jhereg
I've been fortunate enough to have played with or talked to each of them.
For those who are interested, you can look at the previous winners here:
http://www.tw-cabal.com/other/twAwards_ALL.xls
I got this from Kemper. It's missing the 1998 data, so if anyone has it, let me know.

Gary Marten is probably some farmer in Kansas or somewhere....
Gary Martin on the other hand, was just some guy who got bored and made some sort of space trading game... with wars or something.

I'm not the only one who thinks that, Vulcan.
I'm glad to see that you didn't take my suggestion as a personal insult.
I know my timing is not good from the standpoint that the awards ended not long ago and there are hard feelings about them. I know that the awards are not respected by some. But they are a part of tradition. Even though the Liberty Bell is cracked, many people would take offense to someone melting it down out of spite and I don't want to see that happen to the awards.
Bringing this up at this time is a direct result of a conversation I had the other day. The person made a joke about the awards......perhaps ....or maybe they meant what they said. They had certainly entertained thoughts of them. It wasn't funny to me. It comes right up there with respect for ma and apple pie. Ma might have made mistakes along the way and maybe apples cause some to have digestive problems, but don't mess with ma and apple pie. Almost every TW 'god' I've ever had, proved to have clay feet and cracks in their pedestal, but I managed to continue to respect them for what they had given to the community. TW Awards is something like that for me.
And to the person I spoke with on the phone...we do agree that we disagree. I have a lot of respect for Space Ghost simply because we have managed to argue agreeably on several occasions. We don't always disagree but we have locked horns a few times. I have no ill feelings toward you. This is about wanting TW Awards to be an improved tradition rather than a source of divisiveness. You are absolutely correct in suspecting that there is more steel than magnolia in me. I saw a quote once in a Pearl Buck book that went something like this......the strongest steel is forged from the hottest fire. I would prefer to be your friend rather than to have you test my metal.

Look at the vocal part of the community of people who frequent this game.
Are they capable of that?
If so
Someone would need to step up and take the responsibility and put the time and effort in to drawing up a plan to legitimize the TW awards.
Then after coming up with a plane will that someone be around to enforce it year after year or at least until it becomes a set tradition on how the community does the yearly awards.
If your thinking of going back to its roots I’m sure Gypsy probably started it to help get the names of some sites and servers out to the non vocal part of the community back then.
idk I could be wrong.

I hear you. I'm asking that the official TW forum take them and make them the official TW awards. There are people in the community who stay out of the fracus in the forums who people respect because they have earned that respect. I would like a moderator here to ask JP if this site can sponsor them. I recall when Phoebe and Fuseblown were in charge of them. They made strides in addressing the problems of past awards. When cherokee was in charge, people respected him. As good as their intentions might be, letting someone volunteer to be in charge of them gives them no consistency. It causes the previous lessons that were learned to be lost. It's like deciding to remove a support beam with no idea why the beam was there to begin with or adding 3 more stories on a building after the foundation is laid and the inital construction complete. Somebody needs to be in charge who knows what the heck is going on.
A lot of you have voted with your feet. I might make that choice too. I do it all the time in other issues.
maggie, more often a proud member of the silent majority

I'm not 100% sure im reading your post correctly...IF i am,,,im scared of whomever you were speaking with on the phone.
But to be sure you are one of the "Silent Majority" that when you do post *I* stand up and take notice. I dunno about EIS being the proper place for the TW awards...I think this would disqualify me and even though i didnt win Squate this year..I normally get nominated for a thing or two and a BIG game or two that i promote....And yes im perfectly aware that this is a selfish selfish reason...But the same could be true of others who are Mods now and / or maybe Mods in the Future...And while i am Very Happy to Moderate the Smack Talk Area I am not going to stop promoting Tournaments and Doing Special Games of intrest.(besides im not a REAL moderator) I just play one on TV.
I think that if you do have them here at eis then i think a "special" moderator should run it not the normal mods here at EIS
It is my opinion it should be a person whose only job at eis is the TW awrds.

Yea, I voted with my feet the last awards.
I saw where we were going being so late in the year and not having the web expertise to set up a secure voting system or the time to learn how to and with no real added help from others around here I thought it would be best to drop the whole thing and hope it would just go away.
It didn't ender insisted on continuing on with it I guess. I’m so glad I got out when I did though.
Call me an Butt for it I don't care but at least I got rid of that headache before it all went to ****.
And there’s the other part who ever would pick this up also needs to have some expertise in web design and setting up a secure voting system or the time and desire to learn it.

I mostly want it 'official', SG. I don't think all moderators, present or future should be disqualified but there must be a way to have a couple people chosen by EIS run it.
And I do think whoever those people are, should not be eligible. It is the best way to avoid conjecture about whether the persons running it 'have an agenda'.
If there is an 'official Trade Wars Awards, just as there is an 'official' forum, then it won't matter that someone else wants to hold Trade Wars Awards. They can hold all they want.
maggie, who thinks the worst reason for doing something is because 'that's the way it was always done'.

and now, a word from another of the "Silent Majority" [:X]
nice post, maggie
but I would like to see:
6) that all nominees have the privilege of declining the nomination prior to the nominations list being made public
as one of the future improvements to the Annual Twars Awards
I enjoy the Traditon as maggie does, and like many others, I have felt that some people were nominated to ballots to which they did not belong (ya, I did vote against me this year). [:D]
if I think of anything else, I'll let ya know
