What type of program or programs are you wanting to use, ATTAC, GATH, SWATH, ZOC, with or without TWXProxy? SWATH is sort of confusing to initially setup your scripts, TWX is easy but also requires the use of a terminal or client program to see the action, otherwise you will be flying blind. You can download pretty much any script from: http://www.grimytrader.com (under Galatic Script Bank, you will need to reg to download them.) After starting your terminal and directing it to say 127.0.0.1 (which will pass it through TWXProxy) start up your TWX and then right click on the TWX Icon in you sys-tray then click on Load Script this will bring up a window for you to scroll through and select the script you which to run, (you will first need to be a game at the correct prompt for it properly work, if the script is in .TS format you can read through it to note any special instructions, warnings, and even make your own mods to it!) After you have loaded a script you can terminate it by again right click on the TWX tray icon and clicking on Terminate or you can load more scripts using the same method. I am only familiar with SWATH and TWX, I have yet to try the others myself.

SWATH requires a Java program to use Java scripts, in the config menu you will need to open the Scripts portion by clicking on the + you can then direct SWATH to load the scripts within you defined path anywhere on your computer, there is a path for Java, TWX, and I believe REXX/ZOC scripts. You don’t need them all if you don’t want just the ones you wish to use and they need to be in the correct directories or they will not compile when SWATH loads.

I can’t recall the Java program needed (im not at home to look it up), but its location will also need to be identified within SWATH if you wish to use Java scripts. To use your loaded scripts within SWATH it works similar to TWX you just click on the pull down menu at the top of SWATH and find the script you wish to load. Most scripts require that you know certain information such as a sector to go to or from, a threshold or limit, accurate mapping data, a commission, number of turns to use, location of the Stardock, etc. The instruction manuals are pretty easy to understand though, its not do hard to get down, in a couple of weeks to a month you should feel pretty comfy using whatever program you decide to go with.

Well I am very green about this but first of all what helpers do you use? I use TWX + Swath and use the load script function from TWX. Scripts are available at http://grimytrader.com and they offer some good info in the forums there too. Hope that helps some. It depends on what helpers your using.

WOW by the time i wrote this the other two were posted...laff

Try playing by hand in low turn games at first, to get back the "feel" of the game. Most of the "script kiddies" and "macro monkeys" avoid such. I dont mean that you should not use scripts - I do - but until you get back your intuitive sense of what to do, best to play by hand a while, using whatever helper/terminal program floats your boat.

Also anouther good one is the Zoc-TWX combo it seems to run faster the swath at least for me, seems Swath and ATTAC like to use alot of resouces on my computer, hmm i might just need to clean up my comp a little too

Any version of the java sdk jre or jdk will work with SWATH as long as they are j2se, j2ee, j2me compliant. I hope that helps. You can get it at http://java.sun.com/products

Correct. You will need to have SWATH connect to TWXProxy, and your TWXProxy connects to the server you are playing on. So for example, in TWXProxy, you create a database, input the server info, and configure the port (say you put it on 2005). Then in SWATH, create a game file, and set the TWXProxy setting to localhost and port 2005. When you connect SWATH, it should connect to the TWXProxy on port 2005 and then you press $ to connect to the game server you want to play on.

If it interests anyone, I am creating tutorials with SWF demos on using all these programs. It will demonstrate how to create a game file in SWATH, use and connect to TWXProxy, etc. This project has been under development now for a year. JP has been a big support, as has Stein from SWATH. It is called TradeWars Academy, and I am doing this to give something back to the TW Community. My idea was to have a location where new players not familiar with these helpers could see an interactive flash demo of what to do. sometimes seeing is easier than reading.

I will concentrate on the demo file for setting up TWXProxy and SWATH today, and should have it posted quickly. I will post here once it's set for viewing.

does the port numbet matter?
OK let see see here, I enter setup on TWX
add a new game, name Try. enter the server addy, port 230, and 20,000 sectors.
then open Swath, make a new game, named Try. do I put in the hostname/ip?
port 230, 20,000 sectors, click ok save and it
then edit game options, Proxy setting should say local host port 230

OK- in TWXProxy you would put in the game server address. Like merlinskeep.dyndns.org for example, and the port #.
And in SWATH, you would put in 127.0.0.1 or localhost for the address.
That way Swath points to the TWXProxy. You'd want to leave the port defaulted to 23 in SWATH.

Oso, thanks for that. I forgot to mention about SWATH default port of 23. Also remember that the port number you enter in TWXProxy must match the port number that server uses. Some use 23, others use 2002.

OK.
From there, can you press the $? It should bring up another prompt. Then press C to connect.
If you want to look at what else you can do, press the ? key.
$ C should connect you to the server.
Let me know if that works for you. If you don't get anything, there might be some other things to tweak in SWATH.
