Nod. Some several new players have that attitude. Dearl's way to deal with it mirrors mine. Kill them, after repeated attempts to help and give advice fails. They have zip to offer: they just look for "cheats" on the net.

I came across one such recently. Eventually, I got fed up with the verbiage and sd'd the player (warrant) in fed. I was accused of "cheating" - seems one cannot attack a blue in fed. I'm now the cheating sysop of (dunno where it was).

Yeah, sysops are the worst. I've been banned for taking over a stock 250 turn game in 5 days. Can't remeber the server, but it was an old school door game. I got banned twice on Orchestra. Once on day one in a stock 1500 turn game cause I went from nothing to loaded CFS and #1 on the CLV. Fortunately I was using an alias and playing from work, so I came back a second time for the next bang and brought The Cabal with me. We were banned within a few hours. We didn't even block dock or kill anyone. We just exploited the corbo happy aliens and sold thier ships. Did the same thing on weasal's (sp? I think it was twars.com or something) server. Didn't get banned there, just got warned to "don't do that." Almost got banned from DGPI for going on a single day rampage with The Cabal and wiping out every other player that wasn't in fed. We thought it would be fun to take them all out at once. Nice logs, but very unhappy sysop/players.

I don't have anything real recent because I stopped playing on boards that weren't active members of this particular community.

Big D, there are far more new players like the one you just found than ones that actually want to learn. Myabe you've been lucky in the past and haven't run into too many.

This is the reason I'm starting a new permacorp called Lost Legend.
Going to have 5 vets and 5 noobs. Each vet will be paired off with a noob to train them, and after a while switch so they can learn different styles of play. When a vet gets tired and wants to leave, by then maybe some of the noobs will advance vet status, and then we'll recruit another noob. I hope this works, and will teach at least a few of the new players how to play this game the right way.

Well on my server Traitor you wouldn't get banned for being a superior player, I only ban for valid reasons, and from cheating offenses that can be proved, not hearsay, each game has the rules pertaining to them in the desc of the game, some don't yet but those that don't have any rules are fair game, and the BYOC doen't have any rules posted cause the players there ought to know the unwritten rules and the no-no's of megacorping and alien planet farming and DUPING, that one I can't stress enough.Hehe, but really I only ban if the reason is really a valid one and proof is given, if a player is better and someone cries cheat, then I let them know that I will check, and if I find out the player that has the accusation against them, just plain ole outclassed the complainer, I let them know tough, you just got beat by a better player. And suggest they get ahold of the said player and see if they will share with them how they got beat. But thats just me, and I run things better than some of the back water places.

Let's hear from a Noob. I'm getting back into the game, after a couple/8 yr break. I'm learning a ton of stuff from the websites out there/here and the forums. I also try to learn something from each pod I earn...
I can see the angst from a Noob point of view; you get in the game and read the rules on how the game is played, then start fumbling around. Even if you get a helper prog. it just speeds up your play, not really improving it.
Then, out of nowhere, a player smokes you (p-drop scenario) or maybe you just log on and find your awesome base totally scrapped. I can see where the Noob would be stand-offish.

I'm sure you're offer of help was tactful, but even in the best light, it could come off as condescending. For a Noob, out of his/her depth, not realizing just how little they know, it's not hard to see them make the leap to 'Cheater, cheater'
Myself, I'm trying to approach this game with at least a modicum of class. One lesson I learned after accidentally breaking a truce on a new game; politeness counts!! I may get smoked, but I'm gonna try to learn from each mistake...

I like the idea of getting onto a corp set up to learn like yours Big_D and I'd be jumping on it, but I already joined up w/ a couple of other Noobs and we're stumbling along together. I think playin' the game goes in stages, where you go from being big fish/small pond to being in w/ other fishes. My new sig should read; I'll see ya later unless something bigger eats me...

Thanks for your time.
Crosby

One of the biggest skills a new or returning player should learn is how to
choose appropriate games. Getting into a game that's a week old w/ strong
competition will only get you killed. Also, in some game styles... strong
competition can arise in a single day (unlims come to mind). I strongly
advise finding games on quiet servers where you can learn to build and use
modern helpers (scripts too)... this is usually a 1500 to 5000 turn game
on an out-of-the server where can progress thru the various stages of play
and figure out what style you like the most (builder, casher, hunter) w/o
having to deal with rapid action scripts and aggressive gridders.

This is also a good way to meet corpies. When you find other players in
these games ask them if they want to corp. They may say no, they may say
yes. After several games you'll be able to call people into a bigger game
and make a stronger stand, meeting better players and getting better as
you go. Sounds like that's where you're at, Crosby. It's a good place to
be. While it sucks to get blown to bits by stronger players, every one
of us here as been there... and had to pay that piper more than once.

Good advice! I've been reading the forums and sites (tw-cabal awesome, thanks Traitor) and trying to learn exactly that; how to size up a game from the stats given on * screen and game status. The Stardock is also invaluable in this too, as you can 'shop around' quite a bit before you actually 'buy' into a game.

It's a balancing act though, as I could easily find a board w/ NO competition. I'd hate to put too much time into that type of game too, as it would breed false confidence. Luckily I've found a couple of corpies who are, like me, patiently willing to put in the time to learn.

Thanks again,
Crosby

Well just remember there is alot of exp players that would love to teach noobs how to play if the noobs want to learn.. Which is key some do some don't. So don't every hesitate to ask and get icq #'s so u can call opon the exp of this community to learn.

Sing, you have hit on one of the main areas where I hear complaints. A player comes into a days old unlimited and then complains about the universe being figged, and then them being attacked when they start hitting the grid. Some people seem to think that corps that are fighting to maintain a grid should somehow let them come in and tear it up.

*nod* And until they are put into the position of defending a grid themselves they
won't understand how much work goes into building and maintaining it. If someone
puts hours, days, weeks into something you can expect them to defend that something
whenever it's under attack. It's human nature.

I agree with crosby, being out of the loop for years then coming back, yes the universe has changed but there are people out there willing to help, if you love the game a new pod helps build character.
