OK I have heard from River Rat that Kidder may actually be thinking about closing down Alienbase!!!!!

The reason??? MONEY!!!!!

The cost of the connection is only a meager $200 US dollars/month.....

If we could offset that in a significant way, I'm sure we could convince Kidder to keep the server going......

I am pledging 40 US Dollars/month towards the SAVE ALIENBASE FUND right now, in hopes of saving this great server. It has beeen around as long as I have known, and has always been reliable and fair.

well Darn... AB was always a top notch server
at 2 hundo a month what kind of connection is it on? I'm sure it could be downgraded at no loss of performance, unless it costs that much to legally run a free game server.

I'll pledge a one time $20 bill, for now. Ain't much, but that is as it is.

I'm the kindof person that thinks the best way to help is get people helping themselves. Obviously AB is paying for more than just an average connection. Why don't they offer some hosting services to offset the cost?

Here is what I can offer... Alot of you know that I work from home, most of you do NOT know what I do, and that's for a reason... I'm in online advertising (not spam, so don't shoot me)

I'm giving you guys 5 options to choose from, that will change every 2 months, and 90% of the proceeds will go to alien base (minus taxes that come out of my pocket) The items will be detailed in what it's about.. All the links I'll be posting NEED NO $$ to signup, it's 100% free... but you will either be getting junkmail, or phone calls from telemarketers..

Stuff like dating site signups, mortages, new home loans, stuff like that, For the mortgages I'll donate 25 dollars per signup to ALienbase, Dating sites, 4 dollars each to alienbase, and so on and so fourth, if you guys are interested, lemme know... This way we can all help, and it wont hurt any of us.

Well, I would expect you guys not to signup for things you don't want.. that's why I'll try to throw a variety in there. If you signed up for a mortgage, I would expect you to be looking into lowering your rate or something like that... otherwise, the funds are withdrawn from my account (it's called a bad lead, they don't pay for bad leads)

the dating sites and stuff like that require no contact, or subscription over time... and... theres some stuff like Ebay signups now and then, those payout well too...

Just because I'd start playin at your server more often is not a good reason to close down Alienbase.

AlienBase is one of, if not the last of, the "Olde TW" Game servers on Telnet.

I have enjoyed playing there for several years.

I had no idea that it cost the Sysop $200/month to maintain, my bad.

I only found out when I asked RR if he was willing to host the upcoming draft.

Maybe Alienbase can merge servers with someone else who runs a Windows based web server or something? Split the costs, or something?

What does that $200 a month hosting package include? It better have the best bandwidth that $200 can buy or something. If not, RR is getting ripped off.

I am poor, disabled, and my small business is inactive and became a hobby. I was into the computer repair and technical support business. I also did databases, web site designs, etc.

One thing RR can do is offer a Paypal account on a web site for people to donate money to, like Mozilla and others have. Donations are optional, and it is more like a PBS business model, only without the pledge breaks. Get 10 people a month to donate $20 and you can pay that bill almost. How many people play on Alienbase anyway? If 10% of them donated something, it might help keep the server going.

Graz, I like you and all, but I got enough junk-mail via postal mail and email. I am trying to stay away from those free offers, no offense. If I sign up for another credit card, my wife will flip out and force me to cancel it, which might make it a bad lead for you or something. I've been out of work since 2002 so most credit applications will be denied anyway, since I've been on disability since 2003. I'm married, so dating sites are out of the question. I already have accounts on eBay and most of the other businesses that use online advertising, hence my junk-mail problems.

I am trying to get healthy again, and maybe return to work, or start up a new business. But I keep getting sick, and needing surgeries and all of that.

I'm very surprised at the cost. If this is the case, AB is all but dead. Frankly, TW players are cheap. If donations are required to keep it up, it won't be up long. Tis a shame, RR runs a fantastic server. And I might donate if it keeps Sil away from me *g*

I could prolly hook him up with my webserver hosting company an he can maybe get a server package for a lot less than he is paying now, it depends on what server package you want and what you want, but they start at $69 to $119 for a root server, $79 to 129 for a managed server, and $89 to $149 for a windows server 2003 server.

The difference in prices are from the processor speed, memory, and hard drive size for each, if I can help him save some money and if others want to donate then, he has this as an option to help reduce the cost over all as well, and they have good servers too.

They host my server, but I get a deal on it, cause the server they host for me, is my own, that I sent them. I have a cousin who works for a big IT firm and he sent me a blade to install in their system. hehe.

Oh yeah, they have some great bandwidth too.
