Lots of little games, but finding a server that's up 24/7 that everyone on my corp(s) can connect to can be a bit tough. Was wondering if anyone considered hosting a sync server? Since it seems that one server can hold multiple games, a shared model might work. I dunno how you'd charge for something like that, per game, monthly, per corpie, what. But hey, figured I'd ask.
Anyone?

I was already considering doing this. For now it is free, but I might have to change that it the demand gets to be too much and I have to upgrade the feed.
tw2002.silliman.net:7777 is the TWXSync service. Email me gws@silliman.net to establish a Corp database for a particular game - give me the details of the games also, ie. universe size, your Corp name, and the password you want.

You do realize that you will need 1 twxsync game PER corp PER tradewars game. Otherwise, all corps can see the data gathered by another corp. This means, you will need to set up 4-5 TWXSync games per TW game and set different passwords for each and give a different password to each corp.
Let me ponder the best way to do this.
With regards to pricing models, i never assumed anyone would purchase a twxsync server and then charge others to use it. let me ponder that one too.

I host a Sync server myself on my server for players and if the players aren't careful they can cross data and corrupt their games, so listen closely to what earth says, and if you still need a sync host let me know. I can set you up a game on it, I have the latest version, and Zilla is available too as from what I can see, so get with him as well, between the two of us we should be able to handle things, and Zilla does have a good server set up to use.

heh...
People offering to host a twxsync server and earth is trying to scramble up ideas as to why that is "against" the rules.
Isn't capitalism great. )
Earth it's a joke son. Try the veal. I'll be here all week don't forget to tip the wait staff.

You are absolutely correct, Earth. 1 db per corp per game, with unique passwords. Not all that hard to set up, and there is no maint. If the data corrupts, then they get to start over. However, the data has just as much chance of corrupting on a shared server as it does on a privately run server. I would expect at most 4-5 users per db, and rarely more than 2 concurrent users per db. Now if I am wrong, please help me out here, but if twxsync can't handle that - whats the point?

The server allows up to 10 concurrent games. It is 10, because that is what i randomly chose
As for concurrent connected users, it is really unlimited, the bandwidth is so minimal 200 bytes a packet that it should allow plenty.

I offered up hosting a sync server to but it didn't recieve any fanfare... so I didn't... Kept hearing, "but not everyone uses Attac/Swath"... my repsonse was... "but it's great for those who do!" Oh well... maybe later...

Having up-to-date data is the most important thing in tradewars. If all your ports and fighter data is stale, it is as if you were playing a game that existed hours ago. That can get you killed or you will not make as much money. In the beginning of a stock game, there is no way to explore the entire universe. Sharing data with teammates is mandatory.
I dont see how you can play without this. When i used to play stock games, we were constantly emailing CIM and export files to keep up-to-date and it was pain when someone forgot etc...

I agree with you earth, and believe in the TWXSync server, it makes keeping track of game data a lot easier.

Well, from this newb's opinion... it's all about competitive advantage. You either have
it, neutralize it, or have a disadvantage. No real middleground. So either you play
with the most state-of-the-art tools or you fight against them. Everything competitive
advances naturally... just game theory in action (Nash equillibrium anyone?).
Today I sat at stardock, fedsafe, a few million creds in hand. Synced up and got to
probing. Early in the game, enemy grid is small. Every port I found was added to our
list in the sync. Later we ran a twarp gridder and dropped figs, all set... Now all
5 members of the corp have a hundred new ports to look at. That's a serious advantage
for such a small investment of turns and money. Quicker cashing...
