If you haven't done at least 10 of those things (or had them done to you), your first game wasn't REAL.
I rememer some of them but,it there was no others online to chat to.
Single phonelines then. and 150 to 300 bps. Windows was not invented
yet, DOS 2.11
what I tryed to do was Explore every sector, didnt trade much. and
tons of paper, thrying to map the 1000 sec universe. with only 300
turns a-day. and planets to me was a waste of time. and i think
there was no Alens. but there was like 4 players in game, no corps.
and tryed to find them, never did. and if i did, didnt know what to
to do. and still dont![:D]
on a system that was 8 MHz 64K memory, 2 color screen Amber & Black.
a 10 meg Hard drive, and a giant 5-1/4 floppy that held 360K data.
The GOOD old day's!

I recall it took me 6 months to figure out that planets could upgrade. Then again, TW wasn't my first love back in those BBS days.

All too familiar back in those days. 'Zilla I remember the notebooks with warps written in them and the types of ports that were there. My wife played back in those days and I (and everyone else) lost to her due to her attention to detail in mapping and turn usage. Yeah, I can admit she toasted me several times - she doesn't play anymore or read eisonline.

I my experiance, I traded and accumulated money. But as soon as I got ahead, here come a Ferrengi who wanted some of my holds or if I was really lucky, just the product I was carrying. I got mad, but what could I do. I FINALLY discovered the existance of a port that didn't sell product but stuff a lot better...Stardock. THEN let the Ferrengi come. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Laughing at coke!!!!!
Rolling on the floor, squirting milk out my nose, wetting myself, having a heart attack, getting felt up by a pretty nurse, bleeding from the nose, rolling out the window. You get the idea.
Man!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets consider this situation:
Shadan: Whats wrong?
Steel: It said feint metallic click
Shadan: Oh no, you picked up a limpet mine
Steel: Whats that?
Shadan: A tracking device, I know how you can get rid of it
Steel: How?
Shadan: Listen carefully
Steel: yes?
Shadan: the best way for you to get rid of the mine is to
Steel: yes? tell me, I dont want to be found
Shadan: Trust me you wont be found
Steel: OK then what?
Shadan: ok do this exactly as I say it, but, hit "C" "B" "Y" real fast in succession for special options for mine removal, but it has to be quick.
Steel: ok here goes, and thank you
Shadan: NP
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!! KaBoom, Splash!
Shadan: Sucker... >)

Just got to thinking about my first Twars game on the net. I thought I was still pretty good based on my old BBS days and I've got this brand new helper called SWATH. Man, I could ppt between ports and not even have to haggle - recordable macros - good to go.
I start playing blue in a 5k move/sector game on Alien Base and think I'll never use all of these moves. Spend a few days playing and get a couple of level 3s going with figs on them and in the sector - a few mines just to be on the safe side. Man no one will ever find me in 5k sectors - I can build one heck of a base.
Some player comes in and starts wreaking havoc - podding and SDing players and he is in a CFS and they are in ISSs. I figure they probably didn't have many fighters and I don't worry about it - I have max figs, and after all I am a pretty good player and can hold my on.
Now what I didn't know was that this player was probably one of the best around in Tradewars and I really didn't know anything.
About as quick as you can say game over, I had lost my planets and my ship. I did come in the next day only to die from another player. It was a humbling experience to lose that quickly to someone I thought I had an advantage over. The thing that struck me then was how quick he warped in, attacked and warped out before I could return fire.
The person that did that shall remain nameless because he still plays and is still one of the best around. Maybe someday I will be lucky enough to take him out of a game.
That game was just the start of my learning and Alien Base was a very good place to learn the hard way back then. I did run into some players who helped me learn and their patience is still greatly appreciated. Some who provided help were Uncle Sam, Dr Doog, Kasey, and Marduk - I know there are others out there that helped also. Oh yeah, some guy was nice enough to give me an email address for questions and he actually responded - K3.

My first trade wars game was on The Home Sector. I found out the hard way about having 1000+ exp in fedspace, but went on to win the game. I managed to avoid most of the dumb newbie things.

I remember how long it took and how much paper it took, to print out
the MANUAL, on one of those real old OKI Data dot matrix printers.
and running out of ribbin, and getting a faint print copy. and then
Highlighting the importaint parts. and watched Debbie does rylos,
and writing on the walls, at the tavern, and playing Tricon.
The good old days of paper and pencils.
