Hahaa, the Merchant Marines that the one occupation that could actually use TW as a training protocol! I was planning on joining them after I got out of the Navy, but I choose another path instead. They make a ton of money and have fun doing it! Aahhh matey, nothing beats a life at sea!
Did you include your TW experience as "prior job related experience" and include SysOps as "references" on your application... [^]

Yep, unlike ptorping fed space which caused a "little" problem and was "discussed" on here and was fixed.

Akor I am telling you not the Merchang Marines.... The Coast Guard is much better. I tried enlisting in Coast Guard but I wasn't tall enough they said I had to be 6 foot tall; I asked why and they told me so when your ship sinks you can walk to shore.

Hehee thats funny, but we all know its cause when your ship sinks its going to be do to some drunk sailer opening the wrong scuttle to puke into, while the ship is tied up to the dock and the Coast Guard just wants ta make sure you can find your way back to shore from 20-feet out... those lazy louses! hahaa j/k
Coast Guarder's do perform some pretty hard tasks too! Thats a funny story though.

Never heard of mega-rob being originally a bug, but there was one that made the ships have more holds than the allowed max if you entered a negative number of holds that you wanted to buy. The excess number went away after you ported though. And another was by entering a negative number at the Galactic Bank when transfering money, the other guy recieves more than the 500,000 allowed. Those bugs had to do with the binary numbers not being signed. The players of the day criticized the Martins for not being good programmers.
As for the Merchant Marines, the tip sheets said that Grimy couldn't track a trader whose ship was called by that name. I guess it was another bug of the Martins.
But you know, it is hard sometimes to tell if something is a bug or a feature. Take the current versions ablilty to planet hitchhike. It isn't considered a bug so I probably wont be changed in the future versions unless someone can think of a way in which it gives the user an big advantage. Then it may be changed like the ability to trap Feds with figs so that reds could keep their ISSes was. And that ability lasted through all of the Martins' v3 betas in into their v5. (v.4 was skipped. To many sysops complaining about the alpha version taking so long to do.)
One of the points I would like to make in this thread is that I belive all versions could be played---the buggy ones included---with the bugs treated as features. Those bugs don't have the same effect when all players know how they are used. I know that from experience playing games with both sides using the bugs to win with. It was just like a normal game: The best scripters won.

Hahaa, the only additions to my addictions are mixing TradeWars w/ making TWX Scripts while drinking buds... trust me these do not mix! You only end up awakening the next afternoon on the floor in a drunken stupor, with a script that you have no clue is suppose to do and when you finally run it instantly SD's you! [:(]
I did not know about that Merchant Marines bug, I bet it was meant to be like that like in some of the old Nindendo games you could type in a code and get unlimited lives or immunity to certain things; it was probably meant to be something like that.
Planet hitchhiking, I think is dangerous and should be fixed, because the owner of the planet has no idea that another player is on their planet, so that places them at great risk if they should log-off, ZTM, or focus on some other task, etc. Especially if they log-off while in the same sector hovering. I think it should advise the owner/corporation that there is another player hovering in the atmosphere of planet "number" in sector "number". Also it is even more dangerous if the player that is hitchiking on the planet can alert other players in the game (whether corporate members or not) of the new sector number that they are in, (either through the game or ICQ or a external messenger program.)
Overall I think the ability to hitchhike is an added creative bonus within the game, I just think there should be some type of alert system set into place, like when another player or alien hits one of your fighters or mines, it allows you to the ability to react to it, to create a strategy to counter that/those player(s) or alien(s).

The game doesn't specifically say "Joe-blow is hitchhiking!" but it tells you nonetheless. You get a message when a players lands on the planet and one when they retreat. If you don't get the retreat message, then they're still on there. If they retreat off of the fig/shields, it also makes a post in the dailies.

Oh really, ok thats kewl, nobody ever mentioned that before, (that I have heard of anyways.) Ok now does it tell you this whether or not you are actually on the planet and/or sector when the player retreates or lands? If it doesnt and you go to get into another ship or get some more mines (or something) from the StarDock real quick, you would not be able to accurately track them anymore... I guess unless you read the logs but that is kind of a pain in the butt to do everytime.

They don't need to specify what sector # for their corpies. All they have to do is hit "ta" to get there locale.

Oh crikey that command didnt even occur to me. But then again their corpies would need to know to look for them. See this is indeed a serious issue afterall! We will be moving our defenses up to DEFCON Condition Alpha-Bravo, until further notice!! [:D]

Check the Planet Hitchhiker thread for more info. That is where I got mine. I remember Master saying that he and Steel Magnolia have been hitching each other's planets all during the games they've played. So there you will find how to defend yourself from the intruders.
