I hate to badmouth sysops that give us game that we can play for free.
But please don't try downloading linux distros while server is running.
I won't mention any names but there was a lively game going on and sysop decided to start downloading a linux distro which caused an unbearable lag. He said that his machine and connection should be able to handle it but unfortunatly is was not.
I am no network engineer or anything but if a server has 10-15 connections and you try to download a torrent file (which also causes iirc between 20-30 more connections) you are going to affect the lag times of the server. IMHO it doesn't matter if you have a oc-48 connection and it says your only using 9k out of whatever the problems is that you have betweeen 50-100 connections using your cpu cycles causing a major lag.
If you think about it you have X amount of ports to check for incoming /outgoing data I don't care if you have a fast connection you are mot able to transfer data fast enough. Microprocessors have made advances faster than most anything but if you are checking roughly 65,000 ports every millisecond you are going to lag. Setting max commands to a higher value is not going to help, It just exaggerates the problem you have to send/get this amount of data in the particular timeslice that the os gives you and if you can't you wait for your next timeslice.
I can remember back in the old days when 2400 baud was smoking fast... only because you had a dedicated cpu/modem that was only concerned with that particular program sending/receiving data. Today with cpu's being taxed with stuff like not having to check if the data you're being sent isn't infected or whatever ; you're wasting cpu cycles. course 99% of the time it is not noticed but I am talking about the 1% of the time it makes something unusable; but the sysop cannot see it.
If I am out of line on my comments I am sure I will be flamed and probably deserve it but if it helps even one sysop I will gladly accept the flames.
thanks for listening... we now return you to your regularly scheduled flamefest.

Maniac,
I know exactly who you are talking about. He responded to the problem and fixed it when he realized the game became as lively as it did. If anything, we owe him a thank you for paying close attention to the situation and fixing it as needed. I get the impression that this activity was completely out of the norm for his server due to the chain of events in this game.
What more can you ask of the guy? He fixed it and that is all there is to it.
