I asked them to take it down. It was a 100% clone of TW2002, after all ;)

There was a Pascal version of Tradewars released in source code form around '88 or '89. That source has been worked and reworked and was used on some WWIV BBS systems around that same time. A game call Dominions was also released (not Twars related) in the same period in Pascal source. We modified that game to increase the size and added features - one was a take-off of the Ferrengi in an attempt at some type of alien feature.

I never was 100% sure about the origin of the Tradewars Pascal source - still have it somewhere - but it is a far cry from what Twars has evolved into.

Yeah, TW 2002 started from public code. But it evolved into a very unique game over the years, and it's protected by copyrights. Anyone who wants to create a game based on the same basic ideas can do so, whether they want to start with the earlier public code or just create their own code based on their knowledge of the game. The trick is making the new game unique. It's great to see other games expanding on the basic gameplay of TW, but it's frustrating when someone clones the game and puts their own name on it.

For those who are interested, here's my history of TW.

That's still evolving as I learn more, and as recent history is made ;)

I figured as much JP! When I went to the game and saw it, I knew there was going to be trouble :)

Hey, why don't they make it a graphical version of "Yankee Trader." I know I'm a geek, but I loved that one too :)
