Man...I love stuff like that. Gives me chills. I considered going into the military because I consider it one of the most honorable things a person can do. I love my country and guys like that are truly an inspiration.

i knew someone would answer. i was right on the spartans, go me, hehe. is there not a story of a small group of people defeating a very very large one? *i think i was reminded of it in the movie Troy*
also, if you havent seen the movie Troy, check it out, its bad Butt.
the military, it changes your life and its a great and honorable thing, but if you have an IQ of over 55 and you aren't an officer you will NOT be in for more than one enlistment, heh.

Yeah. I ended up going the way of the musician. Moved to the good college music town of Athens, GA (home of UGA) and joined a band called Torrent. I'll stream some songs when we get our demo recorded June 11-13.

is there not a story of a small group of people defeating a very very large one? There are plenty of Thermopylae-esque examples(small heroic group eventually overcome by sheer numbers) that spring to my mind: The Alamo, and the Battle of Rorke's Drift in the Anglo-Zulu war. The latter involved 80 British soldiers (30 of which were in the hospital) holding out against a force of around 4,000 Zulu.

Some people might say that England's defeat of the Spanish Armada is an example of a small group defeating a larger, but I would disagree. THe Spanish had 130 large ships with 30,000 men, but the English had 150 or so smaller ships. The Armada was cursed with bad weather on the trip from Lisbon to England, and had to port in an inadequate and shallow (at least for a fleet the size of the Armada) French harbour. The English loaded some of their nimble ships with gunpowder and sent them ablaze into the Spanish formation. Panic ensued and many of the Armada ships cut anchor and spread out, allowing the smaller English ships to pick off the Spanish one at a time.

While the English definitely took advantage of a favourable situation and had an excellent naval tactician in Sir Francis Drake, the true conqueror of the Armada was the inept planning of the Spanish King Philip II. There were few deep water ports along the coast of northwest Europe for the Armada to take refuge in. Many of the ships had the wrong size of cannon shot loaded, and were unable to fire their guns. The scope of the plan, and the timing it required, was way too ambitious.

Another 'almost but not quite' example is when the Mongols twice attempter to invade Japan in 1281. The first time the Mongol fleet was completely destroyed by a typhoon (kamikaze - divine wind) while sailing to Japan. The second attempt was also hit by a typhoon, but a few Mongol troops actually landed. However, with few numbers and no supplies, they were quickly dispatched by Japanese samurai. Of course, kamikaze took on a different meaning in WWII as the Japanese desperately tried to invoke the 'Divine Wind' that had defeated the Mongols to defeat the Americans, and started using suicide pilots in an attempt to sink Allied ships.

Alright, starting to ramble now ;). So yeah, I can't think of any example of a small force defeating a larger. Can anyone else think of one?

I'm Canadian, and the mission in Afghanistan would never inspire me to join the army. But if another country declared war on Canada and tried to invade, I would join the army in a heartbeat. But then again, who would ever declare on Canada (except for the US of course - just look at the movies 'Canadian Bacon' and 'South Park' ;) ).

Well, there are two types of ways this can happen. Mercenary (solo players getting paid by larger corps to moth for them), or Dupes. Dupes are in general always wrong (don't know of many games that say duping is okay). Mercenary, well, that is all in the style of the game. Personally, I think if you "need" either, the answer is, edits suck. If the author made the edits so poorly that the only way to invade is dupe mothing...there is a problem.

Well, I respect your opinion, but there are many ways to edit a game. I've created, for example, a game that is a "moth" oriented game. It's called "Space Lord Mothers" for a specific reason! I allow 5 dupe accounts per user and there are 20 people allowed in the corp. Some of the planet edits are, well, frankly they are outrageous, but the turns are supposed to be between 2000 and 5000. The game is just "whack" and it's "whack" for a reason. Every single edit was planned and thought out. It wasn't until I had a conversation with Harley that I realized that Dupes should be allowed in the game as well!

This game is designed to be played and played, it has good Alien edits that encourage letting the game run for a while! I wanted a game that utilized all the edits to their fullest, and yet, did not "end in 3 hours" or "in 3 days."

If the game op lets the game run it's course, and the players use strategy rather than quick kill for a while, at the end, it is recommended that the "death delays" be turned completely off, and let the MOTHING begin!

In the end, the guy who has built up the most resources is going to win!

That was the point of the edits to begin with.

Call me crazy, but I'm getting great feedback from people on this particular game!

I apologize, and amend my statement. EXCEPT in the EXTREME example listed above. I stand by my original statement.

Jhereg

As for giving "unlimited cash" with death delays set to off and no death limit, I suppose that's true, but by the time the guy has enough to matter the winner should have already been declared and the game rebanged. You only get 100,000 credits when you come into the game :)

BTW the history channel has many of these Stories very well done also. Gives some nice visual effects even when you go and read the stories to get a more indepth story.

Only 5 million/minute? I think I could get at least 24 million/minute, 1.4 billion/hour. That would be 4 cby's/second. And of course, if you have a corp of 6, multiply that by 5.

typh00n was right, it is more like 5 million/minute. I forgot you had to go all the way to the TWGS menu each time. Slows you down a lot.

Well considering the game in question has been theoretically running a while, and consider the edits I put into it, and considering there are alien ships that you can capture that actually pod into an IDENTICAL ship, the guy that sits there and CBY's for an hour is still not going to be a match for the guy who has been playing the game the whole time.

Heck, the ship that you get from the aliens, the one that pods into another identical ship, that one is worth a FORTUNE. If a guy wants to kill himself for cash the way to do it would be to take one of those ships and have about 20 people sit there passing it back and forth, getting podded into it! Then take and sell all the ships that are made.

Let the guy CBY, he's not going to compete with the players that have been in that game a month or two, studying the edits, capturing these ships, etc.

The problem is, I'm thinking out of the box most of the time, and most people who currently play this game play it one way, with set determined "accepted" edits.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the Gold edits if you ask me. The Gold edits were originally designed so that people could create new and interesting game edits, but instead, we got a bunch of "experts" who tell us how the game HAS to be edited, and if we stray from this, we are "fools, idiots, and irrational."

Everywhere I go, I find the same games running, with the same edits. Gets boring after a while.

Sorry if I tried to ****e it up a bit.

Yet, I don't have any complaints from anyone who has actually played the games I created, just from the ones who find reasons why the edits suck before they even play it.

You're right, though, if I were to just turn off death delays with unlimited deaths in one of the "standard" games out there, it would be ridiculous, yet, you know, I'm saddened by all of this, because one thing is clear from all of these posts in the past day or two.

You honestly truly don't give me any credit for knowing anything at all about this game, so much so, that you think I'd just create a silly game where someone could merely CBY all day at the last day and win it!

Sigh.

Now it's I who shall say "I give up!"

Honestly!
