Last night i started a game on my server and then i woke up this morning and the computer restarted itself...This is not the first time it has happened and no there was no power outage...I am currently scanning for virus...

Anyone playing in that game last night the server is back up and running and sorry for the inconvience.

I had a computer do this. It did it randomly. I did the same as you. Checked for viruses. Reinstalled win 98 se. Did a low level format, format aand again install win98 se. Checked cmos settings. Turned off all power management settings. I changed the Case and it worked fine. I am not sure if the power supply was bad, or if there was a short somewhere in the wiring in the case. It is imposible to tell what fix it will take for yours.
I also know e-tower computers were known for this problem. the i 250 - i 400 came into a repair shop frequently with it. I do not know what the fix was in there situation. Not sure if this is any help. Just what I have run into.

For what it's worth I had issues similar to this with a machine that I was trying to run "stand alone" for long periods of time. It is/was a Dell of some kind, but anyway it would just freeze up sometimes if you left it unattended (and *idle*) for too long. [:(!] Out of desperation I finally started playing with the power management settings and so forth, turning them all completely off. I have not had a problem since. I don't know if it's the same problem as yours but this was really hard to reproduce on my part since I never "saw" what was going wrong.

Anyway, I would definitely second the idea of taking a look at the power management settings.

It did it to me again...This is a computer that i put together myself and have not had any problems with it untill now i am running win 2k pro

Its them Darn gnomes...they come to my house sometimes too...and sometimes they just possess my 1yr old to do the job for them.

A couple of things you might check are: the system is not overheating because of something blocking the fans intake/exhaust areas, and then possibly reseating the cards/cables. We recently "lost" a secondary drive and the problem was a cable that need to be reseated - not common, but it happened. You might want to also check the cpu fan and any other fans that are on the mobo to make sure they are functional. Overheating causes some strange things, and not the least of which is a fried mobo to be replaced.

The power management issues that others have addressed are a lot more common.

As for it not being a power outage, it doesn't take much of a drop sometimes to reboot - some of our computers seem to drop out quicker than others - not logical, but it has happened.

RAM problems can also cause a system to spontaneously reboot like that. I've had that happen a few times, both because of bad ram and processor problems.

There is a nasty worm going around that causes reboots. My father had one of them. Norton AV and other AV products could not scan for it as it infected the AV software. After a random amount of uptime it would reboot the system. I was going to reformat his system; however, I had college work to do so I told him to wait a few days, then he called back and said it stopped. The worm killed itself.

If your AV software is infected, try this tool:

Save it to your hard drive, reboot into Safe Mode, and then run this tool. See what it finds. You may just be pwned by a worm.

I have had other reports of the same problems with various hardware confiurations, in each case it was a worm causing the reboots. This tool found it and removed it.
