I hosted a 1v1 tournament once upon a time, the Blast off Tournament. I had prizes and what not, and about 32 sign ups. It was purley 1v1. The theme of the tournament was that all figs/planets/ships/exp etc. would be transfered game to game as you won.
My computer went out, and I was unable to continue with the tournament. But it was a great tourny none the less.
A 1v1 or 2v2 unlimited tournament is what I am looking for. Or something with 20k turns. High turns, small universe, 1k-2k.

Tranferring each players assets is an awsome idea (although in actual practice it must be a pain in the rear), that way the players don't have to start from scratch with each advancement. Now are tournaments such as this played one game at a time or do you setup say 6-games to run simultaneously?
(Xen's project will (eventually [:(]) change complex games such as these type to favor the Admin, so as to increase the overall capabilities of these games, while decreasing the tasks required to actually complete them.)

The Blast off Tournement would have been pretty cool if it had gone past round one. I think there were 16 matches that went on simultaneously at The Stardock.

Well, basically the idea of transfering everything came from a vision that once players thought they had a game locked up, they would slcak off, but with this measure, the would work til the end!

How long was each round? Was it a simple single-elimination tournament? How was first-round seeding determined--random or based on perceived skillsets?

I think there was a really low death lim, like 3 or something. The first rounds were determined randomly. I'm not sure how long the others lasted but I remember mine being a short game.

Bone Collector had a tournie like that sorta.Death match edits.Get in,get a ship 1 sd and games over.1 vs 1. Never got to finish due to his isp screwing up.It was like March Madness brackets. That would be awesome to do.I think he even has his edits posted at Damageunlimited.com. Players signed up in advance then pairing was random.I would like to play that again.Anyone up for it?

I'd like to see an interesting method of seeding the brackets. Maybe a one day free-for-all with everyone in the tourney playing, first to die is 16th, second is 15th, and so on, and everyone still alive at the end of the 24 hours gets seeded according to total assets. Then you do the usual 1st seed vs. 16th, 2nd vs 15th, 3rd vs 14th, and so on. Heh sort of a time trial for pole position sort of thing, TW style.
Could even transfer THAT game's assets to the 1v1's afterward. Might make the seeding game overly important, though.

or could just have the sysop pick at random.transfering assets would blow as most games will last like 15 mins max.All you need to do is #sd# the other player. There is no building or anything like that.Get in cash and hope you can take out the other person fast.

What about a compromise between transferring assets and not, say after the first round advancement each player gets one stocked out planet and 250-million credits to spend how they wish for round two and then for round three the credits are increased to 500-million and so on. Then every five rounds of advancement an additional stocked out planet is given to the winners, (so by round five the players would each start with two stocked out planets and 1-billion credits.)
These are just examples, it could just as well be 1-billion credits and two stocked planets to start or no planets at all, etc. I think this would add an interesting twist to the game, because it would afford the players that spend their credits and turns the wisest the best chance for survival to the next go around, without the monotony of having to start over from scratch with each advancement. As well this would keep it each players strategy balanced between a money game and skill game, rather then just focusing on tbe skill aspect of the game.
Just had an additonal thought, what about issuing the planets and using "capture the flag" principles, the further you advance the more flags you own and the more flags you have to catch from your opponent, even if you SD the player you have to successfully claim their planets; thus if you SD them it buys you more time to gain an advantage over them and take their planets from them during their SD status, but it still also allows a chance for them to make a comeback, (its a small chance but still a chance none the less, rather then just being SD'ed and you are out.)

FYI i created a program that randomized the orders. I gave each player a number, 1-32, not based on anything, just the order I got the names in, and I would make the program randomize a number from 1-32, then again, and get the two players matches...
