 I know this is a rather silly question but what is the maximum number of ships allowed in any given game?

it is sysop configurable, 40-2000 is their options (the lower # dependant on the max # of players allowed)

The Default is set to 200 i believe, but its been awile since i've hosted a game...

The Big Bang option for maximum ships in game is 400 - 2000

try changing max # of allowed players to 10. you will get a minimum ship max # of 40.
