Thanks Harley and everyone else. I appreciate all the help here and in other forums. I re-banged the games lastnight at 6PM PST and the server was back online at midnight PST. Seems to be running fine.

Thanks again,
Brian

I have succeeded in booting myself from the system using macros in a specific way! I'm experimenting right now and I believe I can lock up another player and boot them as well. I will keep you all posted, when I am finished with my tests and they are successful (which I am confident they will be) I will post the final capture of the event and ask the sysop of whatever system to search the error logs to see if he gets the same errors. At this point, I'm almost positive I know exactly what was done to cause this error.

If you discover a way to lock up another player's session, please send either a private message of it to me so I can put on the list of needed fixes, or send the report of it to jpritch@eisonline.com All publically posting something like that does is leads to an increase in the use of it.

Ill tell everyone how to do it. In swath for your macro make sure you turn off your self destruct protection, it will hinder the macro from working properly. Then I want you to put in cby^m^m. It will work every time. Now to answer Heat sink's question it was not at dock, but at Smashers base. And it was a plain macro that we have been using for years. It is not a bug. ALL IT DID WAS WARP US INTO THE SECTOR SEND OUT 2 ROUNDS OF 60K FIGS. THEN RETREAT BACK LAND ON PLANET PICK UP FIGS AND START OVER AGAIN. nO TRICKS NO WOOL OVER THE EYES. JUST A S I M P L E. MACRO. tHE ANSWER HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED EARLIER. Brian why do you keep stirring the pot. You upgraded the game from .56 to .57 and didnt rebang them. Or your ISP was giving you problems. It booted the attacker and the defender and froze up the 2 other players who were in the game. I knew something was wrong when he went into the sector and didnt come back real quick. His internet connection was not a problem cause I was talking to him on Yahoo Voice. Either the server could not handle the ammount of commands coming through or mABEY IT WAS THE INTERNET. And Brian already posted the messages in another post. It showed the attacker and the defender being booted at about the same time. I dont think we would want to use a bug where our attacker was booted at the same time. And have him take the chance of not being able to log back in and get SDED. Harley this is not any chest thumping I am just trying to explain what is going on. And since the rebang we have not seen any problems on the server.

Well Demon at the risk of "stirring the pot". [:D] I was just interested to find out if it was a problem other than upgrade from .47 to .57 without re-bang. Otherwise I might get accused of cheating again or letting others cheat. I am really tired of that. Besides if there was a whole in the software I'm sure EIS would like to identify it so it can be fixed.

That's why I "stirred the pot" as you put it. [:)]

Snide comments about self destructing or coming and typing in all caps is inappropriate for here. This is a level headed discussion about possible bugs. This is not a place to accuse someone of using bugs or to defend yourself from accusations. Quite frankly, we at EIS don't care how any particular server wants to run their games, or who does what at a server. If you want to talk about stuff like that, do it in the smack talk forum. Your entire post drug in issues that were never raised here nor never needed to be raised. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you misunderstood what these forums are for. However, in the future, you had better make certain your posts are appropriate, or I will take action.

I've long suspected that there existed a bug that allowed you to lock up a player while you were attacking them. I've suspected this as far back as when the first release of "attack" came out. While in the second battle of the elite, I was locked up numerous times while being attacked. I never could get anyone to admit it though, of course.

What I believe now is that this glitch or "trick" has an unexpected side effect in the new upgrade in that it not only locks them up but boots them out of the game completely, back to the server prompt.

Of course, I only suspect it, I cannot prove it because I don't search for bugs to exploit, consequently the only time I find them is if I stumble on them.

One tactic that will have a similar effect is to attack a player rapidly with a macro with only a couple fighters at a time, the time lag from messages of him being attacked will prevent him from responding immediately and will appear to him as if he was locked up by the attack. For instance if you create a macro to warp in and attack a player with 1 fighter at a time for 20 times, your macro ends and you could prolly attack him by hand and kill him before he can respond because he is still receiving the attack messages.

Sounds like a DoS attack to me, flooding someone with messages so they cannot type in the commands to move out of the sector. Reminds me of the old Internet BBSes that played ANSI Muds and people would send ANSI screens via a BBS command to prevent that player from moving while being attacked. The BBS would not take any user input while the ANSI screen was showing. The attacker did a macro that was like "Send ANSI moon.ans UserID" and then attacked the player. The attacked player would see the ANSI moon and could not type anything and then saw the "Grunthar attacked you for 45 damage..." messages after the screen displayed and then all of a sudden before they could type, "Grunthar just killed you..." and they were in the underworld or whatever. I suppose the same thing can be done with one corp member sending private messages to the victim using bursting in TWX for 20 one line messages or more?

the attacker would get stuck, not the target

How do you figure that? I use attack macros all the time and have never gotten stuck, I have even used this tactic a time or two just to mess with other players, not necessarily to kill them. It has never had any effect on me, only the target.

It could depend on the program your running at the time as well.
Some, like ZOC, if not set up right, can have a delay in displaying the actions taken by Macro's, but other programs can keep up with the macro's used.

shrug

the attack delay means 20 " a y y 1 * " or wtv will clog up your incoming buffer for at least 5-10 secs

when i tested it out the target didn't suffer any kind of serious lag, and before the attacker had finished firing his 10th lil 1 fig wave, he was dead

- nb : this used to work quite effectively... but i believe TWGS changed the way attack msgs were sent/received, to balance out what used to be an extremely attacker friendly environment

It's part of the ship delay setting. With a setting of none, it will take 250 ms for each attack to complete. It used to be that a setting on none truly meant no delay. In a game with ship delay set higher than none, it is 1 second * delay * tpw. So half delay in a 4 tpw ship will take 1 * .5 * 4, or 2 seconds for each attack to complete.

Ok, so am I understanding this right? Depending on delay settings, it could take a certain amount of time before I can retaliate while being attacked? I have to wait for messages that I'm being attacked, once the attack is underway? If I'm understanding it correctly (and I'm not sure I am), the question in my mind is, can't this be changed? It seems to me, if I see "powering up" I should be able to immediately power up myself and launch an attack.
