I have heard my different opinions on what is the best setting for max commands per cycle...So there fore i am bringing it to the forums...My question is what you gameops/players think is the best setting for commands per cycle

I have been using 10 in my games and havent had any complaints or requests to change it yet.

i had never changed the setting and it it set for a default of 4 but then got a request to change it i have heard from some that 60 is good and then res told me 30 is ideal so i have heard alot of different things.....

I always had it set to 0, of course I used realtime priority settings. However, I would definatly say no lower than 25-30, otherwise just feel laggy when running macros, heh

There is more at stake than "laggy feel." Basically, the max commands/cycle limits how many commands the twgs will process in one cycle (I think 250 ms by default, but not certain). The problem is with something like killing fighters. To kill fighters and get out, you have more commands than someone trying to pwarp and photon you has. So with a max commands of something like 4, someone trying to photon a person clearing figs will almost always be successful. A setting of around 30 is high enough that you shouldn't run into any problems like that, but not so high as to easily kill your system in high play. Incidentally, max commands at 0 causes some interesting things. Basically, it is easy to peg a processor when set to that. At that point, the twgs basically takes turns processing commands.

Say goodbye to using your computer for anything else, as happens with most other things set to realtime.

If your running a TWGS server for real ,
then you should not be on it to do anything else.
Get another computer to play on and experiament with.
This in the long run always gives you that extra system when server
bites it ..and it will.
But first question was how many commands .. well with scripts like twx or any form of loopers , will send as many commands as your
connection will allow if set to 0 (unlimited).
When its set to 30 or lower players will see pauses when others are blasting commands.
And I recall players were waiting for their turn to send packet.
So if your system can handle no waiting ..and want to open the doors up on your cpu .. set it to unlimitd.

Vid is right here. TWGS server as any other Multi-session stable server makes request calls in turn. If max commands per cycle is set to 0 then in turn the server will except a full block from you and then go to the next session. I am unsure as to just how big this block would be as I am sure that only anyone can guess. That part of the question would have to be answered by the Author. That is controlled by him. In setting this to any other number should be self explanitory.
As of for dedicating a computer just for TWGS. I would never say that anyone should not use there own computer. Some sysops might not be able to afford some of the luxuries suck as a multi-computer system. Not to metion it is your computer. USE IT. However if you are going to be using a computer that you are running TWGS on set it to High Priority. That is more than suffecient. Also you might wnat to use a Memory manager insted of allowing windows to shell out your memory for you. Windows is a Multi tasking operating system. So, use your computer. There are also programs that you can use that will session your proccessor as well. Kinda like the Max commands per cycle question that this thread is suppose to be about.

Correct me MajorPayne if I am wrong but MicroS..t OS is not a multi-tasking system but instead is a time swapping code. Closest I ever saw to a true multi-tasking code was the OLD OS2 code that Big Blue IBM bought and then abandoned when early programmers were ready to write the codes but IBM was not willing to release that proprietary code to make it work as public domain...thus giving Bill Gates further gains in his rule of the Internet. Only hope left is Linux IMHO! [}:)]

Well that *nix port of TWGS is your only hope if you want to go the Linux route.
Either that or get VMWare and load Windows 98 under it and run TWGS under it.

Windows for the last several releases is a true Mulitasking software. You are talking about the first few versions before bussing was well improved. However the question the thread is based on in what to set TWGS to. TWGS is a Time/Command based server.
