 Other Door Games

Didnt really know where to put this subject put here goes lol

I was wondering if it was ever gonna be possible to have more door games then just tradewars... like support for L.O.R.D I and II and Hackers, Lunatix and many others

Probably gonna get some bad responces but oh well ,lol :)

I don't believe JP has any intention of supporting access to other door games through TWGS. There have been rumors about new game development which may borrow heavily from TWv3 and/or TWGS, but these are merely rumors. Your best bet if you want to run other door games is to set up a BBS like Fusion.

Jump into the way back machine to about, oh, 1999 I would guess without actually excavating my old e-mail archives - back to when the TWGS was still opening up 3 sockets per player session anyways. I remember a pretty decent amount of e-mail traffic between JP and myself around this time while I was working on a project I had tenatively labeled the Hydra server which was going to be a generic game server platform to address the same issues the door32 standard does now but coming at it from a completely different angle. Anyways, there was some indication that the TWGS was being designed to be extensible so that other game authors could sublicense the platform as a standalone telnet server for their games. Obviously this was some time back and seriously doubt that idea went very much farther than the Hydra server did.

thats a shame

its true TW has a very large fan base but so do the other door games i used to remember coming online to play my 750 turns in tw then playing LORD I for a hour or so then some lunatix then logging off till the next day it kinda keeps TW alive for me cause untill EIS can put alot more options into TW it sometimes looses alittle replay value

What I was doing before I lost my broadband connection was using the MannTel telnet/door server in conjunction with the Citrisoft internet door utilities (both freeware) alongside the TWGS. That way I could have a single portal to ALL my offered games, or for those who didn't want anything except Trade Wars 2002 they could go directly to the TWGS without the intermediary if they wished. Others are doing the same thing with a BBS front end. I think it is better that way really. There isn't much money to be made in door game development and a lot of it has gone either freeware or open source. While an inelegant solution, Door32 is widely available and accepted as a door game standard and allows developers to create multi platform versions of their games easily. Not that that is much of a going concern anymore but it's a lot less hassle to write something to the Door32 standard than it is to rolling your own winsock server and communication routines.

Ok, if you don't want a full BBS, just a door game launching platform for Windows, you can pick up the MannSoft GameSrv at http://www.mannsoft.ca/gamesrv.php If you go that route you'll need the Citrisoft Internet door package too if you want folks to be able to get to the TWGS through the game server as opposed to (or in addition to) connecting directly to the TWGS. For that visit Steve Winn's bbs doors/utilities page at http://www2.at2k.org:81/vadvdb/FLST12.HTM and look for the files CINET119.ZIP and CINET.ZIP. The latter upgrades the former to the freeware version.

Any chance you could expound on how it works. I've downloaded both gamesrv, and the citrisoft files, and have been unable to get twgs to function under it. Any help would be much appreciated.
