What method do most sysops use when they find dupes. I just setup an TWGS and already I have one person with 3 accounts.

The only rule I have posted is NO DUPES.

Point out the rule to the duper if you want, then if he doesn't clean up his act delete the accounts and ban the IP address(es).

Of course, it depends on your level of aggressiveness as well. I think dhunt traces their IP, locates the real world jackpoint, flies to their home, cuts their phone connections and smacks their kneecaps and knuckles with a lead pipe. :) It's all in the perspective of the thing.

I have not had this come up yet. I have a dupe catcher program that keeps me up to date with possibles and I then check that against a list I maintain. So far I am ,at least I hope I am , dupe free.

I agree with Striker , catch them and point out the rule.
I do not delete them because that is just saying its ok.
What I do is change the p/w and give them the charactor with the most exp .. this is the one they are trying to buildup anyways.

If this continues after warning , then the ban on IP goes up .
This of course will only make them find another way in , and they will.

When/if they do .. point your HUNTERS to the players name .. they do the rest.
This method worked well on my server

Yes, but giving them the stronger character also says that what they have done is okay. You have still allowed them to profit from cheating, and in turn hurt everyone in the game. Personally, I would allow them only the smallest character, and at that on the first offense only.

Harsh, but too many players think they can get away with everything (unless I am still too jaded from MajorMud!)

You are right , but most duppers are not good player or they would not dupe
So giving them the best one (which isnt that good anyways)
just makes them feel they are getting a fair shake w/warning.
So its a trade off.
Also I didn't mean to make you think I let them get away with the Top player before I caught them
As you will see , you can catch a dupper most of the time right out.
And they are not that good of players

Sorry for long post.
use more then one

What everyone needs to know is that unless the ip address is static an ip block is not going to matter. Even some of the cable connections that run all the time will swap ip addresses. So there needs to be some other way to block dupers. One way for cable users it to go by the MAC address, but if people are dialing up it is not going to help. ( . ) ( . )

MAC level banning works beautifully. My favorite thing about MAC address banning is that they can move around to the other side of the world... unless they pick up a new cable modem they're still banned.

I used to help run a MUD (ansalon) and we had very inappropriate behavior comming accross the public channels. Banning is one of the last things we resorted to. Unfortunatly, as with all telnet applications there are always ways to get around a ban. One is to find some website out there with a java telnet client in it. All of a sudden your comming in from another IP. Thats a big problem with MUDs because mudconnector.com has one, and quite a number of people use it to get to muds, all comming from the same IP. Hard to catch multi-players when everyone has the same IP address. What I have found that works best it to calmly explain the rules, warn them a couple times, and if all else fails, make playing the game NOT FUN ANYMORE for them. That usually gets rid of them. (plus its kinda fun too).

---telnet to tribeam.kicks-ass.net and give my computer something to do!

Dupers...a sysop's nemsis. You can't totally eliminate the problem.

My BBS logs the IP address of every login. On occasion I run a script that analyzes the log file and reports when more than one user logs in from the same IP address. I don't always take action based on IP address data, but it lets me know who to keep an eye on at least. I also compare account information including passwords to further clue me in. A smart user can get around the IP checks using various methods, but sometimes they don't think about account passwords or other personal information I require on account applications. Since I require a valid phone number for all my accounts, I may even resort to calling a user on the phone if I feel it is necessary. Most of the time when I inform a user their account has been flagged as a dupe violation, it was illegitamate and they make an honest effor to resolve the issue. Usually its because the user was sharing computers with a friend or relative. Sometimes they had a friend over who logged in on the users computer. It's not an exact science, but it seems to keep the problem under control.
