Anyone managing twgs through terminal services? If so how? I have mine in remote admin mode and I can see the twgs service running but can not launch the app. Do I need to run the terminal service in app mode?

I haven't been able to get it to work as a service very well.

I have had some success running it in it's own remote sessions and just disconnecting and leaving the session active. Then to admin twgs just connect to the terminal services session.

That is the only way I can get it to run right also. If I make it a service it wants to load only in the console session.

When you run term serv in remote admin mode, you are still creating a new connection to the server.
so Admin is logged into the server itself (at the console) and runs TWGS as a service
if anyone logs in via Term Serv they initiate a NEW session, complete with a new TWGS if that's part of the login script. I don't believe that you can view the Console's ver of TWGS via term serv.

What Toad is saying makes sense, depending on how TWGS is written. It it is an App that you run as a logged in user, then it would not be available to other terminal sessions, if it is an app that talks to the twgs service, then it should be. You would need direction from JP here, but I would guess TWGS was not written with Terminal Services or Citrix in mind. Just use VNC like the rest of us .

I'm a sysop/gameop of a server that isn't mine. Now, this topic interested me. I have used both pcANYWHERE and Terminal Service to access TWGS, and its worked out for me. Now, I'm feeling stupid for asking....but what is VNC?

I think the Colonel is on the right track here as well. Once you enable it as a "service" you can no longer connect to it. But it's not really the whole problem, as the TWGS icon (and the program it points to) becomes a "service enabler" once you enable it as a service.

Case in point, if your service isn't running when you boot (disabled, or set to manual) and you log in with a terminal session, if it's been installed as a service and you double-click on it, it starts the service. If it's not installed as a service, it performs like an application, popping open the window just fine.

JP, can you give us some light on this subject and how it interfaces with the system? Can we expect a fix for this? I really don't like using VNC as it's rather unreliable and doesn't have the same kind of security built in as TS.

Oh, and VNC, for those that didn't know, is "Virtual Network Computing", a freeware version of PC Anywhere that's extremely simple and easy to set up, at the cost of some stability and performance. It was developed by AT&T labs and you can find it online at many shareware/freeware download points.

That I am aware of, there are currently no plans to alter TWGS behavior under Terminal Services any time in the near future. The only anticipated changes to TWGS in the forseeable future (and no estimate of when they'll be made) is to improve its reliability and performance under Windows XP, since XP handles service wrappers differently than NT/Win2K does.

Well, that's unfortunate, but I suppose we'll live (deep, depressed sigh). Any way we could convince JP to make a module to just open the window for modifications then, instead of starting or stopping the service? Or, program a quick link that rests on the desktop that works like the icon in the systray for the console session?

What I want is anything, whether it be inside TWGS itself, or a command line option that will allow me to gracefully stop and start specific games in the TWGS, in other words, to make them active and inactive at will. If inside TWGS I want scheduling ability, if command line I can use "at" or some other scheduler. That would be perfect as far as I am concerned.
