I'm sure someone else has asked this, but i've just started working with my bbs again...
At one time, i got SBBS to connect to TWGS via the telgate command (ie, *telgate toadville.tzo.com) and it worked, as long as i hit space after it said "connecting to toadville.tzo.com"... so i added to my telgate command a message to say "press space bar to connect" and that worked. it APPEARS that after some later versions of the TWGS came out, telgate stopped working. (i think it's due to the TWGS because i hadn't changed anything on the BBS). When the bbs runs the telgate command i hit space to connect, and on the TWGS you can see the connection attempt (says connecting...) but the remote screen never brings up a login prompt, and the TWGS will time the connection out. I know the best way to connect would be the Rlogin method, but i'm not ready to commit to a full bbs front end. If anyone knows what might be wrong, or anyone who might have it working, please let me know.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the problem might be. I've downloaded Synchronet (I'm assuming SBBS is Synchronet) and had no problems getting the outbound telnet feature to work with revision .55, nor the RLOGIN (preferred method). You may want to try to do a loopback to test your setup... point the telgate to the IP/hostmask being used by SBBS, so that when you telnet out you simply reconnect to the BBS front end. If that works, then there's a problem somewhere in your TWGS setup. If it doesn't, then its in your SBBS setup.
Using both the BBS and the open internet to allow connections to TWGS has it's downsides. One being it's nearly impossible (without considerable time and effort) to track BBS-based accounts and TWGS log files to look for dupers if they're using both entry points. Such a setup is a haven for players wanting to play more than one account. The problem is that all TWGS connection from the BBS will show only the BBS' IP address in the logs, while you get the legit IP addresses from players telnetting directly in.
Anyways, I hope some of this helps.

I changed my door command to telgate back to local host on the bbs port (127.0.0.1:143) and that worked but when telgating to the twgs, all i get is "connecting" on the node status, but no log in window. I don't know where the problem could be in the TWGS setup, but if you have any ideas i'll be glad to change some settings.

How do you have TWGS set up now? I'm assuming you're allowing connections through the board and straight from the net as well. Do you have TWGS set up to listen to a specific IP address or Auto?

TWGS is set to allow telnet connections on port 23 and set to auto. I don't know how i would set the TWGS to specifically let connections "thru the board" but any telnet connection on port 23 should be accepted via the TWGS

That should work, I would think. I'll have to play with SBBS/TWGS a bit today and see what's going on. I'm guessing I have my test system set up a bit differently. In my case, I have a router up front of the network. Forwarding port 2002 directly to the TWGS (IP 192.168.1.3), forwarding port 23 to SBBS (192.168.1.3), and using telgate/outbound telnet from the BBS to 192.168.1.3 port 2002. TWGS is set to listen only to 192.168.1.3, and that seems to work...
Do you have any banned IP addresses in TWGS? Sounds silly, but when I was running TWGS behind Worldgroups I once managed to ban Worldgroups' IP address. Doh!

I think i've got a few banned IP addresses, but i'm pretty sure my ip address isn't banned. And if it WERE banned, the connection would have been dumped immediately, but instead the connection attempts to continue until the default timeout time has been reached.

Hmm... okay... well... back to the figurative drawing board. Since you've had it set up this way before there's obviously a solution laying around somewhere. Just a matter of finding it. I'll play with SBBS some more today and see what I can see.

Small update. i set up links to all the BBS's i'm in leauge with... all telgate connects to connect to their BBS's. Telgate works properly to their BBS's AND, the "press space to connect" isn't required. So there is probably something that the TWGS doesn't like about this, but i have no idea what. I tried to connect to another TWGS from my SBBS and got the same problem. doesn't show the login prompt.

That's strange. A telnet connection is a telnet connection is a telnet connection... or it should be.
I didn't get a chance to play any further with SBBS (as I was intending to do) yet. Hopefully tomorrow. If it's a TWGS side problem, I'll discuss it with JP when he gets back.

I got the mail, and replied. your bin file worked perfectly. I'll look at the src file later to see what the difference is, but for now i'm just happy it works. thanks again!

I found SBBS for Windows to be a real POS. It was a major resource hog and the account data base blew up after a few days. I'm using Mystic for Linux now. It's super fast and has almost no overhead. It runs a little script when users select "Trade Wars" that grabs the user name from a drop file and does an rlogin to the TWGS.

I've been running SBBS for over a year and i've never had any problem with it. The only problems i've had are minor configuration setup things that stems mostly from the fact that i know very little about BBS's.
I'd like a linux solution but all of this runs from the same box, and there isn't a linux ver of twgs yet, and i know little about linux and little about BBS's, that is just a bad combination

I have been running sync for 3 years and have not had any problems..as far as the gui you don't need to run the gui you can run the console mode version instead of sbbsctrl you run sbbs.exe from the prompt..you will have to pass switches if you run it this way though sbbs /? will list the switches for you..
