Are you safe from attack in FedSpace? If not, how is the best way to hide before leaving the game?

I bought a brand new ship and left the StarDock and was immediately blown up by someone. Not fun.

Also you can stay in fedspace overnite as long as you have 100 fighters or less on your ship, otherwise you will be towed when the game runs its external maintenance, and if there is more than 5 traders at sd or any fed space sector (1-10) you also risk being towed at extern (regardless of your exp). If your exp. is over 1000 you need to buy a cloaking device and when you quit the game it will ask you if you want to use a cloaking device, hit yes. It is far better to cloak out in sector 1 or stardock as you are safe from nav haz.

The number of traders per fedspace sector is sysop configurable. I have seen it as low as 0 (everyone offline gets towed) to as high as 100 (you're almost definately not going to be towed). You see the setting by pressing V when at the command prompt. It'll look something like: Ships per FedSpace Sector: 5.

One other point to add, always carry a few limpets on your ship and a couple cloaks. If you ever get stuck out in open space or dont have enough turns to get somewhere safe then find a low warp sector and drop your limpets and cloak when you leave the game. The sector will show an anomaly but will also show density of 2 per limpet mine. You will be fairly safe from all but the most tedious or bored players. If you dump only a few limpets you run the risk of them all being picked up and then your an anomaly without density, hence you are dead. If you dump too many limpets people will search all around for a pathway to something you are protecting and if they dont find anything they will ptorp your limpets to see if someone is cloaked there, hence you are dead again. Choose how many to deploy by the sector warps and if you found any clues to area traffic to determine the likelyhood of being found there. All else fails try about 10-20...not normally enough to cause someone to ptorp the sector and normally enough that someone who is busy with other tasks wont sit there and pick up all the limpets to check if someone is there. If I cloak in fedspace and THEN get towed by the feds at the Extern, will I still remain cloaked?

You wont get towed unless your cloak fails...I believe...and whenever your ship is moved you lose your cloak as well..I also believe...

General rule of thumb for being FedSafe:

#1 Don't have over 1000 Experience.
#2 Don't be Evil/Red.
#3 Watch out that you don't have too many Figs or you'll get towed.
#4 Watch out for the number of players per FedSpace sector, you could get towed.

Buy a Long Range Scanner, and do a Density scan as you move through the sectors. Look for 2 warp sectors, quit the Autopilot, and explore those. If they lead to a Dead-End sector, write it down for later as a hiding space. Make sure that the 2 warp sectors only lead to other 2 warp sectors and then only to a 1 warp sector dead end. You can place extra ships and planets there if you want, or just drop a few limpids and cloak there.

Every game has a cloak failure percentage, which you usually find out by typing * at the prompt where you enter the game. That is the percentage (usually 1% to 5%) chance of your cloak failing at each extern cycle (run once a day.) Getting towed out by the Feds does not increase the chance of your cloak failing, nor will it make it fail. It also doesn't fail just getting moved; in fact, in extermely comptetitive games, the fed-safe blue players actually tow their reds to fed-space AFTER they cloak. (You have to drop your ftrs, let the Blue lock on tow, then pick up the ftrs again and cloak out. Then he tows you off.)

Cloaking in dead ends is dangerous in competitive games, since a wily player will immediately see the limpetless anomaly. If you MUST cloak in a dead end, drop limpets over you, as mentioned previously. And if you want to be REALLY sure you are safe, check the log for when extern runs (it prints a line in the log with the date, and messages about people being towed and Ferrengi moving and whatever else), well THAT is the time extern runs. Come into the game right after extern, run to fed-space, and re-cloack again.

I should have said under 1000 Exp, so 999 or lower. At 1000 you are not longer FedSafe if you are Blue, Reds are never FedSafe.

that is not totaly true i believe the actually limit on fedsafe for a blue is 1024 but could be wrong....

The limit on fedsafety is 999 - once you hit 1,000, you are no longer fedsafe. Between 1000 and 1023, you still show as a Sergeant Major, so it won't be immediately apparent to others that you are not fedsafe, unless they hit CLV to check your experience. At 1,024 you are promoted to Warrant Officer and then everyone knows you aren't fedsafe at a glance.

God knows how many times I've popped a noob in fedspace that had 1,001 exp or so but before 1024 and he would cry cheat cuz I popped a sergeant major in fed. Gotta watch your exp if you get up to 950 or better. A haggle PPT can make up those points right quick and bam, you are no longer fedsafe.

First thing to remember is that smart players will probably get you no matter what you do...

Settings you should note when logging off:

- Maximum # of ships per fedspace sector; can be set to 0 which forces everyone to be towed. The higher the better.
- Cloak fail is also sysop configurable; it can be set at 0% which means it will never fail. Lower the better.
- Photons can also be disabled which will keep someone from torping your limpet. For hiding, disabled is better.

Things to remember:

Players sometimes try to cloak out in deadends off fed thinking that if firing torps from fed is disabled they are safe. A smart player will drop a lot of mines and figs on top of your cloak. Also same thing if torps are disabled.

Trick of putting limpets down on top of you is dumb, that does not work. If you stop in emtpy space don't drop fighters or anything on top of you because probes will hit them. If someone finds an anomaly you are toast, by dropping limpets you are wasting money. Best sector to stop would be completly empty, no port or anything, preferably less then 3 warps. If it is a 20k sector game deadends are probably ok, but don't choose a deadend to stop in like 500 cause most players will check them in order.

If you try to cloak out in fed with less then 100 figs amd the game is set to something like 5 ships / fedspace sector, smart corps will all log out right before extern in the same sector to try and force tow you.

Also if you cloak out in fed and get towed for whatever reason you run the risk of being amtrak'd. If this happens to you, you will die. Always log in for extern, never allow yourself to be towed in a hostile game.

Another scenario is if you cloak out in fed with less then 99 figs and are not fedsafe and a fedsafe player will sit on top of your cloak with a script running which will pop you when you log back in.

Bottom line, if you cloak in fed and are not fedsafe you better #1, have a fast login script and cloak out in sector 1 or at dock so you can immediatly land on terra or dock. #2, never allow yourself to be towed by always logging in at extern.

Another trick on xp, you see you are a little over 1000. buy a merchant freighter, attack sd with 10 figs. you get poded and lose alittle xp and become fed safe again. fairly cheap way to get another nite fed safe.
