I am putting the finishing touches on a program that'll quickly extract the configuration data from every game on a server (to give something simple for sysops to cut and paste into rebang posts here on the forum with more complete information than * provides), and need to know exactly what level of disclosure people would like to see.

Some things will obviously not be included, such as Class 0 port locations, but others are grey areas, such as one-way/two-way warp densities.

So here is the complete list of available information:

Definitely will display --
Item costs (only differences from default are displayed)
Sector count, max players, max planets, max ships, etc.
Whether internal aliens/Ferrengi are on and their basic settings
Flags such as multiple photons, new player planets, MBBS/Gold, etc.
Starting figs/holds, turns/day, etc.
Basically all of the info you can already get through existing means
Commands/interval, interval length, ship delay, fig lock decay, etc.
Tournament settings (max deaths, days to enter, etc.)
Date of bang, age of game in days.
Last day extern ran and busts cleared
Terran max/regen colo settings
Turn bank # of days

Stuff that definitely won't be included:
Registration oodes [:P]
Ferrengal location
Class 0 locations
Underground and tedit passwords [:P]
The random seed [:P]

Stuff that's a grey area; not currently listed, but not too much of a giveaway:
One-way/two-way warp densities
Bubble settings
Ferrengi regen percentage

So what do you think? People are going to ZTM anyway, so I don't think knowing the warp densities or bubble settings are too big a deal. It'll give people an idea of how convoluted the universe is supposed to be. As for Ferrengi regen, it'll give a general idea of how quickly the Ferrengi ramp. That's a non-issue anyway in non-newbie games, as Ferrengal is taken in the first couple of days if it exists at all.

I'm thinking I may just include all that info and the sysop can delete it if they want. Might release a later version with commandline options to silence certain information. But for a nonconfigurable version 1, should I or shouldn't I display that last info?

I'd like to see the fed photons setting in the list

That doesn't display currently? It'll definitely be there. It's part of the "flags". I wasn't being completely exhaustive in my list. [:)]

Just as a sample of what output will look like (though I haven't put all the local setting info in yet by far):

(Edit: Okay, fixed it up nicely for forum display.)

Now to add the rest of the info to the local data.

Edit: Okay, now it translates & sect (w/o the space) to § in the tw2002:\\ URL's, but the URL itself works properly, so I'm happy enough with that.

If this is given in real-time or updated frequently I think it would be dangerous to include the density info, because it will allow players to obtain instant knowledge of were all other home sectors are currently positioned within the game, this will force players to put their planets into open space to avoid detection. As well players fleeing from one invasion by moving their planets, would have no time to setup for the next invasion; because their new location would be given away to the other players via the posted logs. If they are not updated timely, I think it would still cause conflicts in the game; I would never be able to sleep, are you trying to make us all go insane Xen, you better get use to hearing something like: "Because of that funny guy, I have not slept in an entire year!" hahaa... [|)]

I agree with displaying the bubble settings and any and all alien information, I think that would be fair to all players alike and kind of represents what the ship's scanners and Federation intellegence gathering would be able to do anyways if this was all for real.

Er, I think you have the wrong idea about warp densities. It's not densities like a density scanner displays. It's how many one-way and two-way warps there are in the universe. Defaults are 3% one-way and 30% two-way density, which for a 10000 sector game translates to 300 one-way warps and 3000 two-way warps in the game, see?

All it tells you is whether the sysop set up a lot of one-ways and less two-ways or something. No way it could be used to find home sectors, though it might allow someone to create a more sophisticated ZTM algorithm. None of this data changes mid-game (unless the sysop changes something in tedit); it's just meant to facilitate bang announcements.

What about blacking out the dots? It takes the alignment off for some reason though? This flipping editor bites!

Ohhh ok Xen, I totally missed that one, LOL; I gotcha now (you know that did'nt even cross my fragile little mind [:D]) if that is that case then I agree with them all, (and don't be calling me no sellout, heh!)

Blacking out the dots isn't easily done by the automatic formatting C++ offers. I'll just stick to visible dots. It's the most unobtrusive character in that particular font.

You mean C++ does not allow you to put the bracket commands and the desired color at the start and end of each set of spacing's (as used by php)? That is funny, I would have thought that to be a simple thing for any program to include as a function... unless the program thinks the brackets are telling it to run a routine, but if that is the case what about using the equivalent ACSII codes ([ Dec 91 Hex 5B HTML #91; (& # 91 ;) - ] Dec 93 Hex 5D HTML #93; (& # 93 ;) - / Dec 47 Hex 2F HTML #47; (& # 47 ;)) or is there maybe someway to recognize it as a text quote?

I just found out that PHP converts the HTML codes back over on it's own, thats is cool! (I spaced the actual HTML codes above in the curved brackets so they can be seen.) Does C++ convert codes over before sending the information out though? (I guess it really does'nt matter anyways, so long as it is readable to PHP; which in either case it would be.)

Ok that is weird when you view the HTML codes in the 'Preview' they show up as a graphical display, but when you actually make the post it changes back to the code sequence. I noticed that the "&" symbols were missing after I edited this post, so I guess the conversion removes them for some reason?

It CAN be done, it just isn't easy. Adding a fill character is as simple as setfill(' '); but adding "[ black ]" at the beginning and "[ /black ]" at the end of every fill would require writing my own functions instead of using the standard library, and I don't feel it's worth the trouble.

Ya know what, nevermind, I figured out an easy way to do it... Lemme test.

Perfect! Thanks for the idea, Rexx, the black coding makes it look SO much nicer.

Everyone: Is there any information missing you'd like to see? Any reordering of the data overwhelmingly preferred? Note the costs (other than photon/cloak) only display if they're not default. I set all the costs in that first test game to non-default to show what it looks like with cost information.

Psion said he would prefer to always see cost info in every game, whether or not it's default. Thoughts?

That is much better, it looks super sweet! I agree with Psion, I think that would be easier to keep track of and besides your doing double columns anways so it will not be much more longer... by chance would it be possible to also include comma's, would make it easier to read through the numbers. [:D]

Where exactly did you envision commas? Edit: Oh, you mean separators for the numbers themselves. 1,000,000 instead of 1000000? I can do that.

Well, I did the mother of all beta tests and had River Rat try it out on Alienbase. Worked like a charm. He didn't want me to post the result here for whatever reason, but I PM'd it to him and it looked great! If it works for a server with over ten games, it should work for anybody.

There was one issue, however. All the black tags in output of that size caused the forum to give script timeout errors. I had to split it up into two PM's to make it work. So an alternative method of formatting to all the color tags would be nice to find. Until then, people will have to keep in mind that more than 5 or 6 games per post may fail.

Given the success on RR's Win2k system, I'm confident that it should work on Win2k/XP. If anyone out there is running a TWGS on NT4 or Win95/98/ME, please let me know so I can collect more portability data. My program itself should work fine on any system, but the method I'm using for registry access may not work on a non-NT kernel (95/98/ME).

Yea, that is what I was referring to for the comma's, it would undoubtedly be much easier on the eyes, now I will only have one other thing to worry about making me go blind, LMAO! [:I]

That would be one huge post, geez 10-games at once! Yea it would be a good idea to break them down to a few at a time anyways, that would be to much to run though at once; would be kind of confusing. Besides who rebangs that many games at once anyways? I would not see the timeouts to be much of a future problem, (especially if it was automated hint, hint.) [;)] just messing! hehee

Say hello to Mr. Comma. Note I use scientific notation here; 4 digits still gets no comma, but 5 digits or more is comma-grouped normally. Just the style I like.

Also welcome full price lists. Though that means longer display, and possibly less games per post without giving the forum fits.

Also corrected minor bugs like unlimited turn games listing as 0 turns. It now correctly states "Unlim" where necessary.

Putting the finishing touches of polish on it and then I'll put it up for download. I still haven't had a tester for 95/98/ME, so caveat emptor. Not that you're paying for anything. [:)]

Oh, the program is about 40k zipped if you have the .NET Framework v2.0 installed. For those who don't, I'll also provide a version compiled with .NET 2003 which has no requisite dlls but is about 180k.

Test of a splash of color to help quickly look up certain data. Standard game data in the standard beige, prices green, generally red-focused settings red, generally blue-focused/planetary settings blue, bubble settings purple (cuz I felt like it), and aliens pink (because I just like the idea of dressing the Ferrengi in pink [:D]).

Now I suspect the reaction to this one is going to be a love-it-or-hate-it sort of thing. Either you're going to like the way you can find the key info you want quickly, or you're going to think it looks too colorful and gay. [;)] I tried to avoid the use of any colors that are too dark to read comfortably on the forum's black background. Let me know what you think.
