This is a new one on me.
I recently reinstalled TWGS, downloaded whatever the latest version is on the site, .61 i believe.
When i start the server, and attempt to connect remotely on another machine or even on the local machine but using telnet, the "enter your name" prompt comes up, but as soon as you enter a name it just freezes.
On my mac using standard *nix telnet, this freezes my terminal.
On a PC using win ME telnet the server doesnt even feed the "please enter your name" prompt, it just stops after the escape character line.
I even tried using telnet from a colocated linux box, and froze at the name prompt as well.
I have never seen TWGS do anything remotely like this. Very very confused, any ideas?

Of course i have a game banged.
I can connect on the remote admin port as well, but after putting in a menu command, it freezes same as the game port.
I havent changed any hardware or software on the system since running games last. The only change is this new version...

More info:
I just found out that if you connect, enter a name, then just type A, it does work sortof.
It sits for about 20 seconds but looking at TWGS on the other machine i can see the icon go from yellow to green and say im on game A.
After that, the screen clears and it SLOWLY displays the first 2 lines of the menu (tradewars gameserver copywright EIS yadda yadda) then suddenly loads the game ANSI and the game runs perfectly fine.
So it seems that my problem is with TWGS itself not sending its menus and such. When i found out that you can enter A its completely blind, nothing comes up when you type, nothing is on the screen besides the enter your name prompt.
After quitting the game itself, the TWGS game selection menu loads perfectly fine.
Is there a chance somehow the menu ANSIs in the TWGS dir are corrputed or something? I even downloaded version .55 to try and it did the same thing.

Okay, This sounds very similar to what I had experienced. When I was looking at .58 & 61.
If you used the default installation directory, that the setup program gives. This may very will be your problem.
In the previous versions of TWGS/TW2002. The installation program used 'C:\Program Files\EIS' as the default installation directory.
In what ever version after .55, JP decided to use 'C:\Program Files\Epic Interactive Strategy' as the default installation directory.
When I allowed the installation program to install TWGS/TW2002 to that directory. TWGS/TW2002 would take anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 minute to load up. And logging into the server. To play a game, resulted in a lag of 30 seconds. And when using TEdit form the Command Center window. Produced the same amount of lag.
I also noticed, that 95% of all Gold Aliens. Would not even run, nor would TWGS attempt to restart them.
So I uninstalled TWGS/TW2002. And then later that nite. I decided tht I would attempt it again. But, this time I used 'C:\Program Files\EIS' as the installation directory.
And by doing that, TWGS loaded up just fine. No delay of any kind. And when playing in a game, or using TEdit, there was no lag. And all Gold Aliens would load up and run.
This looks like an issue with TWGS/TW2002 and the file I/O routines. As it is having problems with using the default install directory, in the new installation program.
Heck, 'C:\Program Files\Epic Interactive Strategy' is 42 characters long. And then adding the remain directories. Would place it close to, if not over, the typical 64 character length. That is imposed upon the Win 9x/ME series. And Still present in the Win NT/2000/XP/2003 series.
'C:\PROGRAM FILES\Epic Interactive Strategy\TWGS\GAME\TW1' is 56 character long. And if you use different directory names, in place of the TW1, TW2, TW3, etc. than they more than likely will go over the 64 character limit.
'C:\PROGRAM FILES\EIS\TWGS\GAME\TW1' is only 34 characters long. That is a difference of 22 characters.
So I would suggest that you try, uninstalling TWGS/TW2002. And then reinstall it. And make sure that you use 'C:\Program Files\EIS' for the installation directory.

This thing is a complete and utter mess.
I uninstalled the entire thing, reinstalled with that path. It kept all my settings and games in the TWGS settings so it obviously didnt really uninstall anything.
I had copied my game directory out. Put it back in.
Cannot bang the game, i do and pick to use current data files, sure whatever do it, and absolutely nothing happens. Cant use editors or anything else.
Still cant log in.
I also noticed that even with changing the path, when you choose to create a new game in TWGS settings it still tries to use the "epic interactice strategy" path.
This thing is a complete nightmare. All i want is my bloody game to work.

Fixed none of the editors or bigbang working. I had to edit my registry for the key ServerRoot and change it to the new path of EIS not Epic Interactive Strategy. Banged the game again.
Still cant log in. What a suprise. The only change with the new path is that when you press A to to get into the game invisibly, when you quit out of the game menu it doesnt show the TWGS menu at all.

Sorry, that my suggestion was of not help to you. But, the second problem you outlined. Was the exact same as I had experienced. And that was the only way to fix it. So maybe, in your case, it is something more than that.
Hopefully Gypsie or JP and help you to get it going again.

Rick got me working last night. Eventually narrowed it down to intro.ans, my copy was corrupt somehow, even from 3 different versions reinstalled.

I know this is an old thread, but I seem to be having a similar problem with version 1.02. I created my game, it lets me telnet in, asks for a username, but won't show any games in the menu... #, !, and Q are the only options. yes, I have big-banged the game. I even tried the earlier suggestion here about uninstalling it, and re-installing in an EIS directory... same result - I still have the longer name directory as well, and for god knows what.

If you want to change the name of the directory TWGS/TW2002 is installed in, at time of installation.
Then you need to tell the setup program. The name of the directory you want to install TWGS/TW2002 into. And if you do not, then the setup program will use what is set as the default.
There is always a window, that asks you were you wish to install TWGS/TW2002. Just change the path information listed on this window. To install TWGS/TW2002 in a drive, or directory, of your choosing.
Now as to your problem. This might be a problem of you not using the default menu. In the Configuration window, under the Settings tab. You will find 2 options.
1. Startup Menu
2. Description Menu
Both have a text box next to them. Have a text box, with default names for a ANSI screen. And both have a check box, to the right of the text box, that states 'Default'.
Unless, you are planning on creating your own ANSI screen menus. Then you need to make sure the Default is checkmarked.
If this doesn't help, then hopefully Rick will help you.

Thanks WABBIT, but I did do that thing with the install - I got it back to the default directory (un, and re) installed. and I just looked - both menu options are chosen as defaults. I should also note that I can't seem to get the tools package installed... this may be because I haven't purchased Gold yet. dunno

You might want to check the config window for the check box at the bottom that makes the game active or inactive, inactive games will not show up in the menu.
