I am trying to put my TWGS on a Win2k machine mostly for smoother operation and less downtime as compared with win98. The one thing that came up when I installed it is under the configure tab I set it to auto run, minimized, and on line. Also unlike win 98 the boxes below that are available, I checked both show icon in service task tray and NT admin account only, since the admin login is all I use. It gave me a message about running as a service to use the twgsserv.exe file. My question is what the hell does that mean and why would I run it as a service. Excuse me for being win2k illiterate but I guess I dont understand the service part of it, can someone please explain this. I did notice that when you boot into windows it does not autorun and that may be the reason why but for the time being I put TWGS in the startup menu to get it to start automatically. Thanks in advance.

Basically a service can be set to run in the background even when no one is logged on.
One limitation to the product that I've found, however, is that you can't use the GUI to configure TWGS if it's already running as a service. Therefore I recommend that you have everything set exactly the way you want it before you change it to a service.
Even though you won't be able to use the GUI, you'll still be able to connect and admin your server through the admin port.

That's not true.
I run TWGS as a service, and the GUI is available as long as you are logged in. You just have to make sure to check the box that says "show icon in tray"

Shorty,
I have been running my TWGS server on a W2KAS box for 2 years now. What you are doing by running TWGS as a service. Is allowing TWGS to run in the background. This also includes when the system is up and running, but no one is logged into Windows. This allows you to run the server 24/7 without having some one logged into an account.
I would recommend that you setup TWGS as a service.
I have never come accross a problem with using the GUI when using TWGS as a service. Provided you select the show icon in the task tray. The NT Admin account is for if you have multiple accounts. Then you can set it up to only show the icon in the Admin account only.
NOTE to rompca - that is the reason you do not have the GUI. You do not have it setup properly.
The only issue I have ever come across with TWGS running as a service. Is that if you go to install any new software on the server. If you installation program is a 16-bit, or 16-bit and 32-bit hybred. Then the installation will not finish starting up. It seems that TWGS interfears with the installation program. And causes it to hang during the initial program start up.
If you go to install a new program. And the installation program does not start up. Then all you need to do, from the GUI, is shut down TWGS and exit the GUI. Then the installation program will continue to run like it should. Or just shut down and exit TWGS before running the GUI. Only a true 32-bit installation program will run without any problems.
Stopping the server from the TWGS GUI, or from windows services panel, does not solve the problem. You have to also exit/close the GUI.
If you do not run TWGS as a service. Then you will not come across this problem at all.
NOTE: I have also come across a similar problem with some 16 & 32 bit hybred programs. If you run a program and it seems to not run. Then try running it again. Some times it will run at this time. And after you finally get it to run. It will run without any problems. Until you have to do a reboot. Then you will have to run it twice to get it to run at all.
At other times you will need to shut down and exit TWGS to get it to run. You will have to do this every time you run that particular program.
I have noticfied JP about this problem over a year and a half ago. (Actually, the very fist time I told JP about it, was 3 years ago. And I remind him every update he releases.) And I don't believe he'll ever get it fixed.
