I was sitting at Rylos in an IC with several Ferrengi ships trapped in the sector. When EXTERN ran, the Ferrengi ships disappeared, although my Interdictor was still switched on after EXTERN. How did the Fertrengi ships escape and where did they go? If EXTERN temporarily disabled my Interdictor, or towed the Ferrengi ships somewhere else, would it have also done this for real trader ships? Is this disabling of Interdictors some special feature at Class 0 Ports and/or Fedspace, or does it happen in every sector at EXTERN?

Interdictors don't work in Fedspace.
As far as I know, Extern shouldn't change how an interdictor works. I set up a universe and sat in an IC outside of Ferrengi Space. Some Ferrengi warped in and attacked me. I then ran extern. None left, and the interdictor kept them from leaving. I'm not sure why they disappeared in your case.

Could this have something to do with the ferrengi "moving" as is stated everyday in the log? I've never experianced this as I have never been in this situation with F's trapped by an IC at extern time. Very strange.

Maybe they just docked at the Class 0?

Unfortunately, the ferrengi don't have to follow the same rules that players do. ALso, the Class 0 ports Rylos and ALpha Centauri are not in fedspace, so an IG will work fine at them.

That was a joke. [;)]
I'm guessing this thread won't get a "Thanks for the quick reply." [:D]
