Ok well on the road to making a few new alien races, and I go and create a NAM file. but when i select it in the GOLD manager it pops up with the error:
File XXXX.NAM not found in Gold subdirectory!
If i put any of the test1-5 in there it works, but as soon as I use any other name, even renaming one of the test1-5's it doesnt pick it up, i have cycled the server and also restarted TWGS.
Any ideas?

I believe that TW is looking for a file name that is standard to the old DOS standard. ie 8.3 8 characters for the name, with a 3 character extention. If you do not have name in this standard. It will not find it. Plus, you do need to make sure that the extention is .NAM/.nam.

JP released an application specifically for creating alien NAME files and RANK files. I just spotted this at the bottom of the TW revision history list and downloaded it (I had forgotten about it), and I will check it out very soon.
(Oops! The file is TOOLS100.EXE)

Although I can get the NONPNAME.exe to execute correctly and generate alien names, in the editor, I am unable to view custom ranks; it ends with similar error, unable to open file.
I am also unable to locate the aformentioned utility to create them. Does anyone know if this fixed this issue? Please advise.

Alrighty then:
Downloaded tools set, installed ok and used ok.
STILL did not work.
HOWEVER, after some messing with I discovered that the names would work only when copied to C:\Program files\EIS\TWGS\Game\Gold.
My Game dir was C:\TW2002-I "For Game I" on menu.
Any other way to correct this? ALthough it works, it makes file organization difficult.
Thanks again.

Had to go to the 3.09 docs for this one; the NONPNAME.DOC file is not included with the current version of the TWGS. Ok, the non-player name generator feature pre-dates the TWGS and it looks like this may have been overlooked in the design. You can only get it to recognize *.nam files that are located in the \TWGS\GAME\GOLD directory. I tried dumping it into the \GAME\<gamename>\GOLD directory but it doesn't work. Perhaps this would make a good enhancement request for the next version.
