No, I am talking about TW1. Very, very similiar in nature except the way the universe is put together being the biggest difference. When TW1 no longer was supported (don't know if you can even reg it anymore), TW2 was the one to use obviously.
TW1 and TW2 can still be registered. Neither are supported, nor are they ever likely to be. TW2 was last updated in 93/94 or thereabouts, possibly a bit earlier (late 92ish?).
TW1 was written by Chris Sherrick (of Sherrick and Morris' TW2 fame) and used a very similar I.EXE as TW2(game initialization program similar to bigbang.exe for TW2002). The universes created in TW1 and TW2 are strikingly similar. Again, the reason for the "multiverses" in TW1/TW2, was so that the game could load universes without pushing the computers' memory to their limit. (A 1,000 sector universe requires a lot less memory than a 10,000 or 30,000 sector universe.)

On a given system when both were present, TW1 had more players. Maybe it was that TW2 was brand new and players just weren't use to it yet. Don't know. It predates your entry into TW Land by about a decade. As time went by, TW1 disappeared and TW2 took cammand since it was supported.
Actually, TW1 would predate my entry to TW by almost two decades. I've only been playing for about two and a half years. TW2 rocked the "Trade Wars" boat, so to speak, because it introduced a true multiplayer environment to the game. And despite many,
many bugs, it became widely popular by the time the majority were worked out (and about which time Morris, who had taken over full control of TW2, decided to abandon it in pursuit of other interests).

The best feature (about the only feature) that it had was the jump gates from XXX to 1111 to 2222, etc. where players would often go to a specific "Galaxy", form teams, setup listening posts, find all the gates, setup defenses, etc.. In order to move into a protected "Galaxy" it may be akin to an invasion.
The TW2 universe created by I.EXE works in this same way, with each galaxy (I call them "miniverses") having entrance and exit points to other galaxies/miniverses. Basically, 1,000 sector bubbles with just a couple entry points. Very cool universe layout.

That is one option I would like to see added to the game so the Sysop could turn it on if wished. I think it would add another dimension to the game.
Although the reasons for creating a universe like this aren't valid anymore with computers having hundreds of megs of RAM these days, not to mention swap and page files, it would be neat to see a universe like this in action in modern TW games.
If you want to take some time to create a universe like this, I can give you some tips on how to accomplish it. I've done this before, with a 20,000 sector universe made up of 1,000 sector "miniverses" that were linked together. With the new big bang bubble options introduced in .55, it would be even easier than when I originally created this type of universe.
(In a previous post I said that the new bubble options wouldn't help in this kind of universe creation, but after thinking it over some more, it would be very possible providing you have some patience and time to see it through.)
