I have been seeing a lot of references to elite players in some of the post lately. What I would like to know is what makes a player an “elite”? How would someone go about becoming just as good as one of these god like players we are all so scared of? Who do you consider to be elite? And are they still actively playing games on servers?

My perception of an elite player is one who has the ability to adapt to whatever type of game he/she is playing. Corp/solo player, 500 turn to unlimited, aliens/no aliens, blue strategy or red strategy doesn't matter to these individuals. They have a very good knowledge of the game - they don't have to read tw-cabal.com for information - they know it and then some. They are excellent in all aspects of the game from hunter/killer to data mining to gridding.
The way to become as good as these players is to develop your knowledge of the game. Corping with different people, even those newer to the game than yourself, will give you different takes on the game. If you can corp with the elite class player, so much the better, but never pass a chance to learn a new aspect of the game.
Now who do I consider an elite class player? There are several players who I think could be considered in the catagory or very close to it: Jhereg, Kemper3, Alexio, Uncle Sam, Big12OzHog, Dr Doog, Zep, and there are others that I know I have left out that would fit in the catagory, but I have went up against these players - and lost rather quickly.

You said it yourself SCARED
Any player im scared of I concider Elite.
But is is just a Title, like one time i witnessed something
no long story, the HERO was realy the one that caused the whole thing
But the NEWS reporters saw it diff and made a HERO out of him.
And the real HERO was never interviewed. (was not me)
and i was not the only one that saw the truth, But the truth is somtimes not NEWS worthy. So my point is Thay are whoever YOU
think thay are, King, Hero, Elite.
(its a good story maybe one day i will tell it)

Really, anyone that other's call "elite" are people they can't beat for whatever reason. Usually, its because they use "super scripts". Elites are players that just know how to play. They figure out the edits. They study what is given to them and use the advantages for them and the disadvantages usually don't hurt them. Anymore, elite is used as a slur by most.

Sure I'll throw my opinion in.
I consider an elite to have the following qualities:
1.) Be able to determine a good strategy from available material (edits posted, reading in game, etc)
2.) Being able to adapt. Being able to handle situations one wouldn't expect
3.) Finding ways around things. I was in a game with super tholians, no way to invade if people were at keys. I watched two people figure out how the reloader worked, and invade.
4.) Understanding more than "blue's furb and grid, Red's cash." Understanding what makes a good method cashing, gridding, defending grid, etc. In other words knowing the game inside and out.
5.) Being able to perform in any roll.
6.) Finally, combining all of the above to be a good player. I know people have had tons of game knowledge, and sucked rocks. Or people who could determine new inovative ideas, but never implement them.
If the question was asked of todays players:
Alex, BC, Loki, K3, Diddy, DW, Oz, Xide, Rev, and Ck. Those are the people who come to mind. I'm sure there were others I don't know before, but I don't consider someone who hasn't played in 10 months to be elite. There are probably others who deserve that too, but those are the ones I have played with and have a strong respect for their skills.

You will know very quickly if you are facing any of the above mentioned players. I personally think the term "Elite" is far to loose. There are probably about 25-30 players out there that could be considered as the top 10%, but there are only a handful that are the best at what they do.
BTW : Scripts don't make you a good player. There are a ton of peeps out there with alot of scripts, but still can't win. I think its the amount of game knowledge that makes the these players who they are.

turn and time management are the two biggest, followed by game strategy, As in real life the people who manage their time and money the best are the elites. An elite player will waste very few turns if any in a day, they make sure everything is planed out before they do it and double check the steps. It's not nessesarily that they play better than you its that the get more out of what they do, the poor player will waste upwards of 30% of their turns for things that could be done in a much more efficient fashion. average players 10%-30% depending on the day it could be less but on average they waste some turns (they still make mistakes but have learned to manage there turns to the basis of tradewars.) great players 2%-15% is the range i believe they fit in heck everyone has a bad day, they normally fit in the 2%-5% range. Elite players waste 1% or less of their turns on a day to day basis. Now when i say waste turns i don't mean move from 1-2 then 2-1 a wasted turn would be SSMing instead of SSTing when possible then SDTing. Others would be forgeting to take ore off of a planet having to land again after you lost a turn for picking up figs. All of my turn wasting concept is based on what i've read on the economy of tradewars (tw-cabal) a better player nows when and where to do things, they don't rush ahead but the aren't conservative. They find the medium between turn management and turn denial (ie you miss a guy three times wasting 12 turns but you get em the third time photoning them and making them lose 500, your turns were well spent.) Lastly an elite knows when they make a mistake and make sure it doesn't happen again, learning from things other people just view as part of the game they see it as a mistake and look to correct/prevent it.

How about this, we put to a vote, every month we have a player of the month, each voter picks 3 players he or she thinks is Elite.
at end of the month results are posted.
