 Re: Day Date
The date is set to about 12 years into the future i think.. if you make it 28 years into the future (for memory) the day should come out the same. (this may need testing as my memory isnt what it used to be)

 Re: Day Date
Your right , I just tested it .. http://www.archimedes-lab.org/datOmatic.html#tablesThat works even if the following years contained leap year with no change to Day (from server and game) or the sysop can add 16 yrs to their server box to get the same result. The first method would be more desirable because you may want to use that computer for something else as well.

 Re: Day Date
I don't think your windows/anti-virus auto updates will work if the system clock is that far off.

 Re: Day Date
I probably haven't figured it out yet.
I don't understand why an op would change the time to effect extern. Why not just change the time extern runs for a given game?
Is the goal here to change the "midnight" of the game to be a more friendly time, like 8 pm? Extern can be any time, but midnight is an important time in the game, whether or not extern runs at that time. So I could see why it might be useful to shift that time to a different time in the day.

 Re: Day Date
Ok, but I don't understand why they can't just check the server time which is supposed to be realtime. It's just not clicking.

November 7, 2011 is a Monday. But November 7, 2023 is a Tuesday. So it's Monday where you are, but the server says it's Tuesday -- and that's for a server in your own time zone. Throw in the confusion of other time zones and the International Date Line, and some players will get really confused when a sysop says, "I'm rebanging on Tuesday." All Vid is suggesting is offsetting the Tradewars universe a different number of years into the future so the days of the week line up. Some sysops already do this by changing the year on their system clocks.

 Re: Day Date
This is for J.P. (off this subject a little tho)
If your a player .. extern at midnight is easy to understand because everything happens at that time (from their perspective).
We all know that certain things happen at midnight and others at extern .. The thing is a server in the US might want for all his players to be able to be around at midnight server time regardless where in the US you live ..
So they would set the server clock to be 2 time zones away .. (Santago) so players in Ca. see extern at about 9pm and NY players at 10 or 11pm
The server may be central time zone. The server I refer to is UTW.
now back to subject ..
Right my Day = Game Day !

 Re: Day Date
Ok, we can go around about the question of whether players should be looking at server time or game time to determine what time and day it really is, but maybe it would be worthwhile to provide a server time in-game. The most appropriate place for that would be the @ command (as long as it doesn't change it in any way that would mess with scripts). But as far as changing the way TW handles days, it would be a major can of worms, especially when you consider the transition from active games to games that use the new "real day". Days are important in TW.
I understand that in theory people can be confused about this day. But it hasn't been an issue for many years. In the past there hasn't been a way to detect the true local server time. Now there is. I think people will just need to become aware of that and use that when scheduling their playing time. I will try to make server time/date more prominent when you're on the server.
As for the points about when extern runs, you're just confirming my point about needing to be able to shift the "midnight" time in your game to a different time. You can already shift extern to a different time, and I want people to be able to do that because it's lame to have to be online in the wee hours of the morning. But if there are other in-game events that are "midnight" events that need to coincide with extern, then I need to provide a way to shift those as well. A simple way to do it would be to allow the gameop to specify what local time should be midnight in the game. Yes, this would create confusion when a player checks the time and sees that it's 3 pm when it's actually 7 pm local time, but I think there already is this confusion if you're changing your system clock.
There should never be a reason to change your system clock to accommodate TW. I want to get that fixed.

News to me , because most computers are not equipped with GPS so you can get current location to confirm actual location time. I will run a test on a new box , server .. to see if there are any adverse happenings with the server clock set 16 yrs (to give a total of 28 yrs from current date) into future to get the requested effect. I suspect none in TWGS ..

 Re: Day Date
As far as I know, TWGS hasn't reported local server time until recent versions.

 Re: Day Date
I don't know what that means. Server time is the time reported by the server.
