Unread post Higher Ping with new server
Several players have reported higher than usual pings with the new server software since the timing changes were introduced.
Players also reported that the game felt sluggish.
We tested the ping using the old software on the laptop (same network as new server software) and found a difference of around 200 using ProPing. I swapped the software on the 2 machines and got the same result.
Note that it flies locally :-)
Settings are..

Y-screen:
input/output bandwidth - 1mps broadband
latency - 75ms

Z-Screen:
Ship move/attack - constant (25ms)
All else set to none.

using version 2.03

You may want to try the ping emulation command. Tedit, then Y, Latency=150 (defualt).
Thier is also inbound/outbound speed settings to match your internet connection type.
Maybee a higher setting on the ping to be more inline with actual ping will work.
You could also try disableing Netbios and IPX to lower your ping rates. Another check is "services" and disable "telephony", a backdoor best left disabled unless you have dialup modem.

Is there any way I could have a look at the server? It would be very useful if I could connect with remote desktop.

If you set Y screen latency to 0, does that improve things?

Something else I'd like to test is whether the longer ping time is measured on the TWGS beta site as well. If someone is measuring a long ping time on your site, I'd like them to connect to twgs.classictw.com and measure the ping time there. It should be 150 ms as set in the Y screen. If it's measuring long on the beta server, it'll be easier for me to troubleshoot it.

Y-screen latency set to 0 does NOT improve things..

I am available to talk voice most days on my teamspeak server.. same address as the TWGS server..

The strange thing is that one player who reports a worse ping here since the change .. reports a better ping at a site in the states since the upgrade (ycity)...

This problem still persists although i havent installed 205 yet.

I have an old beta set up on my laptop and my server is running 204.

A log in and ping test can confirm the difference between the 2.. from the USA i expect about a 300 ping difference. For people closer the difference is less severe but still obvious.
I have swapped the versions around on the server and laptop and the larger ping follows the newer software.

My server is kinda quiet and i suspect the ping issue might be the problem since most players here are US based..

There have been reports of ping times being higher than expected for some on the beta server, but I haven't been able to get with any of the players to troubleshoot the problem. If I could access your server, it would help me shed some light on this. The problem on your server seems to be more extreme.

I can't ping your IP, and the nearest pingable address has a ping time of 200 ms (I'm in Kansas City). If the true ping between TWGS and the player is greater than the ping setting in TEDIT, then TW will not impose any additional delay. The measured in-game ping should then match the actual network ping.

How are you measuring network ping to compare to the in-game ping?

i am on Teamspeak now.. and i have a char in the A game if you need to communicate (port 2002).. the laptop is up on port 23.. the ping difference is not the problem.. its the slowness of play for the people playing.. using proping in-game on both servers at the same time shows a steady difference of around 300 (500 v 800) from colorado.. and a difference of a steady 100 (200 v 300) from western australia.. i am on the east coast.

The easiest way for me to look into this problem is to use http://join.me so I can open a virtual window on your desktop. You can email me a link so I can have a look. With any luck, I can duplicate the problem and then start troubleshooting it. I may need to install a debug release to really see what's going on.

I found out the person on the beta server with high ping is on dial-up. Not much we can do there.

They still make 56K modems?

BTW, the term "Cable Modem" is somewhat of a misnomer. The device is actually a "Router" or a "Bridge". It is not "Mod"ulating or "Dem"ogulating anything!

What I'm concerned about is the appearance that the in-game ping is higher than either the network ping or emulated ping. If a player is measuring 100 ms out of the game but 180 ms in the game, with the emulation set to 150 ms, there's a problem. And that's what we seem to be seeing in some cases. I need to learn more about that.
