A script would have calculated ship's odds and then attacked with what was needed.

Even a script doesn't know how many shields a ship has. But it turns out that the speed of a script is not necessary to reproduce what jaybird saw in the log.

This is off topic, but now I'm curious... when a ship is attacked, is the distribution of damage between its fighters and shields proportional to the number of fighters and shields that it has?

The scripts will know the total POSSIBLE number of shields, and it will give you a percentage. So then the script can calculate the number of figs it would take to cap the ship if it has enough figs to cap it in one go. If not, then it will just destroy the shields and then recalculate the number of figs to cap a ship. It's what I do by hand if not using cherokee's shipcap script.
